Veilchenblau is a large, once blooming rambler that covers itself with purple/magenta blossoms in the spring. These blossoms are about 1 1/2 to 2 inches across and have a white eye in the center. As they age, they become closer to violet in color.
It is a fast, vigorous grower and quite hardy. The plant in the picture was
started from a cutting two years earlier. The blooms are on the previous
year's growth, with the new growth growing tall above it. You can
imagine what it will look like the following spring! It may eventually
get to be fifteen feet. The poor rose underneath it is a another
one of my gallica seedlings.
