The blooms of Hebe's Lip are semi-double, almost single, opening to show off plenty of golden stamens. The buds that are deep pink or red tipped, open to 3 inch fragrant white blooms with edges brushed with deep pink, much like the petal edges of Leda.
My plant is only two years old and definitely looks like it hasn't reached its full size yet. So far the growth is vigorous and the plant is somewhat sprawly. The foliage has a bit of an apple scent which gives away the eglanteria in its ancestry.
Hebe's Lip was named for the Greek goddess Hebe. Hebe was the goddess of Youth and Spring and served nectar and ambrosia to the gods. She was a daughter of Zeus and one of Hera's three children and was server of nectar to the gods. She quit her job as server to the gods when she married Hercules who had at that time just been made a god himself. I don't know what part her lip played in any of this.
This particular plant was obtained by a cutting, so it's on its own roots.
