Harison's Yellow
Hybrid Foetida - 1830
Harison's Yellow is a very tough and prickly once bloomer. The small, soft yellow
blooms come early in the season and are pretty again the rather delicate
foliage. It is commonly
seen in Colorado in abandoned lots and near empty old farmhouses,
tolerating quite well the lack of care and water. My own Harison's Yellow
came with the house. The previous owner, who had built the house, had
never given it any care, saying that it had always been there, surviving
on its own.
This rose is VERY prone to suckering and will spread well outside of
it's boundaries, even if it has to creep under several feet of landscape
fabric to do so. It is sometimes refered to as the Yellow Rose of Texas,
and is said to have been brought across the prairies by those traveling
across in wagon trains. Given how well it spreads, I sometimes wonder
if it crawled across the prairies all by itself.
I thought I'd do a little research on the "Yellow Rose of Texas" to see if
it was Harison's Yellow and was surprised to find out that the Yellow Rose
was not really a rose at all, but a person. The words "There's a yellow rose
of Texas I'm going for to see", in reality refer to a woman of somewhat
questionable virtue.
