John Kalishes Passes Away John Kalishes, one of the moving forces of the Boston rock and roll scene since the late 60s, died unexpectedly on Jan. 9, 2004, following a brief illness. In recent years Kalishes was associated with the late Ben Orr of the Cars. Ben and John co-wrote a number of songs. While touring as ORR, playing coast to coast, John was ORR's guitar player and ORR's bandleader. In 2002 and 2003, John worked on his solo album MIRAGE after building his own state of the art digital facility, Black Hole Studios. MIRAGE was released just two months ago and can be acquired from his website at www.kalishes.com.
Song Of The Week Returns! Well sorta. After over a year without a Song Of The Week nomination, interest seems to have rekindled on the Frozen Fire e-mail list. Unfortunately, interest seems to have waned almost as quickly. Check out what songs have been nominated for the SOTW and nominate your own on the Frozen Fire e-mail list.
Site Gets A Facelift! After years of being the best source on the Internet for all things related to The Cars, the visual presentation was looking very dated. For years I wanted to do something about it and finally found the time re-do the site. Links have been cleaned up, files Fortune City would not allow have been removed and the overall appearance has been revamped. Unfortunately, Fortune City still has a tendency to break links to files and sites, but there is not much I can do about it without paying to host the site. Please with any problems you have or recommendations to make the site even better. My thanks to Jack G. for his help with the facelift and allowing me to use much of his hard work in my site.
Ocasek named senior vice president of A&R (Artists and Repertoire) at Elektra Records! Maybe now we will see some great new bands being discovered. See the ARTICLES page for the complete scoop.
Ocasek Producing a Cars documentary! From Rolling Stone news, "Ric Ocasek plans to take a couple months off from producing to begin work on a Cars documentary. He will edit the documentary himself and then shop it around, with hopes of getting it released as soon as the end of this year." Who knows how his VP position at Elektra will effect this, but hopefully we will see this in 2004.
Ocasek working on a new release. Ocasek is getting ready work on his fifth solo album (first since 1997's Troublizing). Per a quote from Rolling Stone: "However, on the new album, Ocasek plans to go it alone. 'I just want this particular record to be different than any of the others I've done,' he says. 'I intend to do it all in my own studio, in a much more homey way.'" See the ARTICLES page for the complete scoop and check out www.ricocasek.com for updated info. This was originally supposed to be released in fall of 2003, so we all need to stay hopeful this new release will be on its way soon.
New Ben Orr album potential. After Ben Orr's passing, John Kalishes among others discussed that there was a new Orr CD pretty much completed and ready to be released. Many of the potential tracks for this CD were played in the numerous live performances by the Orr band as well. Before passing away, John Kalishes was asked about the status of this CD, he noted that it was in the hands of Rhino Records (Warner Strategic Marketing to be exact) and that he had no idea if or when it was going to be released. To help Rhino decide that this is a must release and to help push any other Cars related releases, MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD and e-mail Dr. Rhino! The Cars up for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Will the Cars finally get recognition for their incredible influence on Rock 'n Roll? Check out the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame website and see. Hopefully the 2004 inductees will include our favorite band - I'm sure Ric's promotion to VP of A&R at Elektra won't hurt.
