Here are two books I really recommend. I read the
Tipping point by Malcolm Gladwell last year. It was
a fascinating book for me. Perhaps because I didn't use to read much non-fiction
books, not being
able to finish one usually, it was a surprize for myself that I couldn't put
the book down, and breezed
through it. The entire book is basically illustrating one theory with lots of
vivid examples and research
studies. I loved his writing and he cites experiments and studies from so many
different fields, many
of which are part of our daily life. I am constantly amazed at his power of
linking and relating the
examples to the main point he is illustrating. His new book- Blink was released
a few months before
and I am almost done with it. He preserved his writing style but now with another
completely different
theory. The mesmerizing point is that both theories are refreshingly new and
different (or maybe I didn't
read wide enough on related topics). Tipping point is about the idea of social
epidemic and changes-
how certain things suddenly became popular and trendy; or how a TV program show
like sesame
street became popular. Blink, on the other hand, is about "rapid cognition,
about the kind of thinking
that happens in a blink of an eye". It explores how our unconscious instinct
mechanisms work.

Read the book and Have fun!
Online shopping has become a common thing for me
after I came to the States. Its many advantages
include easy comparison of prices and search for discount coupons. Surprisingly,
it takes alot of time
doing that, which in a way is fun, if you really want to find the best deals.
Was searching for an mp3
player for quite a long time... Badly needing music to listen to for my hours
in the office as my desktop
does not have a sound system at all, not even a cd drive (which is alittle bizzare
:p ). After many days
of comparing prices, reviews, functions etc, i finally decided on the creative
MuVo fm 5 GB mp3 player.
It is almost ideal for all the functions and capacity I was looking for at an
affordable price. I placed my
order last Wednesday with buy.com, but it has yet to ship!!! That's one big
frustration about online
shopping- the shipping and wait. Well, it was because of a little complication,
however, i'm rather
unsatisfied about their service and response... And now I'm sort of stuck, if
I cancel my order now, it
might get even more complicated.. and seems like I just have to be more patient
and wait... ohh well...
It's been quite a while since I last updated. Life
has treated me well, and one major change occured
in my life. Secured a job at a good firm and have been one of those millions
of daily commuters,
squeezing in the subway trains at 7.30 am in the morning, for 3 weeks+ now.
It seems strange though how life progresses in
stages. Being a kid and youngster in school is the first
stage- things were simple then for me- you have a clear goal and you work towards
it. I think I am a
rather simple minded person. Right after graduation, you also have a short term
goal- find a steady job
and begin a financially independent life. Now after one starts working, things
blurred more... What is
the next step and how you want to go from here no longer seemed straightforward.
There are millions
of possibilities but you could get by without exploring any of them too. However,
life goes on week by
week- yes, the unit of time seemed to operate on the weeks now, work 5 days
and come the weekend,
another 5 days and weekend again. On a even smaller scale, eight hours in the
office in exchange for
another eight of free time at night. In the beginning, you are grateful for
the good night's rest before
your next morning; you eagerly anticipate the arrival of the weekend, to charge
up for the next.
However, it goes on and on and on, without answering the question of "so
what?" Maybe there should
be some planning for the long term bigger picture and one should work towards
that? I am not sure
what mine is at the moment. What is yours?
