Pass You By

Chris looked down at his tuxedo unable to believe he was doing this again.  How after all this time could he bring himself to do this?  There was no way that he wanted to...in doing this it was going to shake up the world as he knew it and yet here he was parked out front with his hands on the steering wheel.  He eyed the church again wondering how he could bring himself to do this to her....to himself.  He took in another breath knowing that being here was the last thing she wanted, the last thing she needed and yet here he was parked in his car dreading this moment more than anything.

Chris looked at the clock once again.  Twelve-thirty five.  It wouldn’t be long before this was starting and yet here he was ready to do the one thing he’d promised himself that he wouldn’t do, to say all the things he’d vowed would never be spoken from his lips again.  He closed his eyes wondering if this was a mistake.  Was he really ready for this move?

She was like nothing I'd ever known
Her eyes shine like diamonds in a field of snow
Man. that destiny led her to me
Made her feel that life was now complete

A thousand days have passed
And nights gone by
You can see the glow slowly fading from her eyes
Though she denies her pain and her dismay
Know I said this to her anyway

Don't have to stay with someone that makes you cry
You'll end up killing all the love you have inside
Can't hope to see the sun
If you don't open your eyes
Girl don't let real love pass you by
Ooh oh no
Ooh don't let real love pass you by.....

Leisurely Eve took in a breath lazily trailing her index finger over the rim of her martini glass.  This crisp autumn evening left well enough to be desired as she stirred her drink for a moment or so.  It had been six months, six long grueling month since her divorce and more so it had been six months since she’d received any sort of attention.  This had to be her longest dry spell yet, well if you didn’t count life before the age of thirteen, and here she was completely miserable.  She tilted her head back slightly as she raised her chilled glass to her lips taking a sip of the alcohol and feeling it burn down her throat stinging all the way down as she‘d hoped it would quench the ache that lack of interest had brought upon her, but tonight on such a quiet night, not even the promise of alcohol was enough to drive her to distraction from the stagnant state of her life.

It was quiet tonight.  Perhaps too quiet in the Ramsey apartment as Eve shifted her eyes from the olive she’d plucked at for what had felt like an eternity as the heaviness of the silence filled the air.  She glanced over at Chris, who’d been unquestionably buried in his work for far too many hours on end.  How did she know this?  Well, it was rather obvious as he hadn‘t even given thought to her new black dress she‘d bought to mourn her current state of unrest.  After all, any man with a pulse would pay her attention because she knew she looked that good, and yet, she frowned, she was getting no response from Chris, which made her unusually irritable.  This of course led her to the question she’d been wondering yet again on this dreary night.  Why wasn’t Chris taking the bait here?

What could she possibly be doing wrong because she was Eve Lambert after all, every man’s fantasy and yet...Chris hadn’t raised a brow.  Surely he had to be interested.  He had to find her attractive somehow.  He did have a pulse so therefore he should‘ve been predispositioned to being interested, Eve frowned watching him slaving away over his work as she thought about it.  He was a typical hot blooded American male who should’ve been all over her a long time ago, and yet...nothing.

“Maybe he’s gay,” she thought to herself before tossing her head back slightly.  She shook the thought.  No, that couldn’t be it.  Well, actually she had seen him speaking rather heatedly with Frank Scanlon the other night now that she...no, Chris was not gay.  She just hadn’t been persuasive enough, but perhaps she could work on changing that tonight.  She recalled her earlier attempts as she’d tried to throw a flirty smile in his direction once or twice, but the response she‘d gotten was yet another scratch of the head followed by a soft, obviously detached sigh that had passed from his lips.

What had been so damned important that he hadn‘t found the time to notice her, she’d asked herself a countless number of times as she watched him jotting down a few words here and there in between thumbing through the pages before him.  She’d watched his position rather closely for quite some time now memorizing his posture as her finger slowly rounded the brim of her glass once more.  His hunched shoulders and the occasional sigh that had escaped his lips was more than enough to convince her that perhaps he too was in need of a distraction.

“Chris,” she spoke to him in a soft, even tone pressing herself further into the thick black cushions of his leather sofa in the hopes of gathering his attention.  She eyed him closely as his thick fingers--the fingers she’d found herself dreaming about more often than not these days now that life had her at a standstill--released their hold upon the ball point pen he’d been using.  The things she could have him do with those fingers, she thought to herself as he tilted his head ever so slightly, the light over head catching his deep set eyes as he looked to her.

“Yes?” he questioned raising a brow as she leaned back slightly extending her slender legs out a bit upon the realization that she’d managed to capture his full attention and hopefully keep it if she‘d played her cards right.

She patted the plush cushion beside her throwing out her best wounded expression out at him before she spoke up in a soft, seductive voice, “I’m getting lonely over here and you,” she smiled slightly in a demure fashion though she knew her thoughts of having him over on this couch were anything put pure as her eyes caressed the frame that she’d found herself growing increasingly fascinated with as time went on.  Eve smiled slightly feeling herself compelled to bring him over.  Granted Chris may not have raised interest much in her before this current living arrangement they’d had, but he was most certain to raise more than that should she persuade him into spending some quality time with her.  She was certain she could find a way to capture his attention as she circled her glass with her index finger once more, “well, you could use a break.”

“Could I?” he questioned doing his best to disclose the amusement he’d felt in her approach.  As his eyes cast over her bronzed legs, he was fully aware of the lack of innocence on her part as he’d recalled of two well how Eve would behave when she was on the prowl.  She threw out all the stops when she’d wanted something and judging by scent of her perfume he’d taken in earlier and the innocent expression on her face, he knew she was up to nothing but trouble and somehow this was all centered on him.

Eve had been out to impress, yet he‘d been reluctant to take the bait as he saw the ideas spinning behind the chocolate swirls of her mischievous eyes.  He’d known it from the first moment she’d offered him a hint of that sinful temptation over dinner hours before and now she was trying to entice him with some kind of delectable dessert of sorts.  She’d made a point of leaving him enough room for him to give into temptation, yet thus far he’d been hesitant knowing of Eve’s reputation of going through men like her wardrobe, constantly changing with her moods.  He’d seen it one too many times for his liking as he watched her play the game, using them up to their full capacity then flushing them aside.  Then again she‘d been the one that had been tossed recently, yet that didn‘t change who she was, what she was..., but oh did she look tempting.

Tempting didn’t even begin to cover the thoughts Chris had of her in this moment.  He’d dreamt about having her in his home, in his bed and more importantly in his heart for so very long and now she was eyeing him as though he was about to become the next savory dish.  He smiled slightly drawing out any response she may have expected as his eyes glanced her over.

She patted the sofa once more awaiting his response, “Come on Chris, you know I don’t like drinking alone,” she threw him one of her killer smiles.

“I don’t like being distracted when I’m focused,” He countered with a hint of smile as he reclined back in his chair a bit.

“Now Chris,” Eve frowned pulling herself up from the sofa as she watched him, “I think you’re truly being focused on the wrong thing at the moment.”

“And what should I be focusing on?” he questioned watching her move across the room slowly.

“It’s quite simple actually,” she smiled at him as she slid over to him, “the only thing you should be focusing on is me.”

“You,” he repeated with an amused grin as she tugged on his arm attempting to pull him from his seat, “and why is that?”

“Because it’s not every day you find yourself blessed with having me at your place to share an evening with you,” Eve insisted with a smile, “you should consider yourself very lucky.”

“Lucky?” he repeated with a hearty laugh, “given the lengths you’ve gone through to get my attention tonight, I’d have to say that there’d better be something in it for me down the road.”

“There could be if you play your cards right,” she winked at him pulling him up from his chair before leading him along to the sofa with her, “now sit.”

“Is that a request or an order?” he asked noting the playfulness behind her eyes.

“Maybe a little bit of both,” she shrugged watching him fall back onto the cushions as she gently pushed him, “see that wasn’t so bad.”

“It would be even better if I had a martini,” He cracked a grin as he looked up at her admiring her beauty.  Even now he felt his breath catch in his throat at the sight of her.  She was beautiful, absolutely perfect in every way and she was finally home.

“You drive a tough bargain and normally I would make you get up and get it yourself, but since you’ve been working so hard,” she crossed the room noting the way his eyes never strayed from her, “I think I’ll make an exception this time.”

“Aw, thanks Roomy,” he reclined back a bit as he watched her pouring his drink, “remember two olives.”

“How could I forget?” she questioned smiling sweetly as she returned holding out his drink for him.

“I could get very used to this kind of service,” Chris winked at her, “sweetie.”

“Chris,” she started in a warning tone before remembering her intentions for the evening, “this won’t become an everyday thing.”

“And just when I thought you were warming up to me,” Chris chuckled in amusement as she took a seat beside him on the sofa.

“Just think we’re together again,” Eve laughed lightly as she held her martini glass in hand.  “Can you believe it?”

“I was starting to think it was the impossible dream,” Chris confessed finding it hard to suppress the delight he’d felt in having her home again.  For so long having Eve around and in his life seemed like the impossible dream, but now, in having her here, it was as if the world was set straight again.

“Oh you were not,” she laughed lightly as her fingers brushed against his shoulder, “admit it Chris, you think I’m cramping your style here.”

“Eve, you could never cramp my style,” Chris confessed seeing the sparkle behind her eyes, “and besides having you here cuts back on the rent.”

“See I knew there was some reason you liked to keep having me come around,” Eve laughed lightly before swirling her martini around again.  She raised her glass to her lips taking another sip before she gazed at him again.

“Oh come on Eve,” Chris spoke with a cracked grin before taking a sip of his martini, “don’t you know you’re the woman of my dreams?”

“Oh please Ramsey,” Eve couldn’t help but feel a laugh building as her previous notions of the evening of seducing Chris seemed more like an ill fated idea gone wrong.  She noticed the bright smile on his face and she’d wondered what had possessed her to want to do that to him.  He was her best friend and yet, rather charming, “give it a rest.”

“I’m serious Eve,” Chris shifted his position on the sofa a bit to face her.

“You are not,” she laughed again feeling a slight buzz overtaking her.

“I am very serious,” Chris insisted watching her eyes as her laughter tapered off and she grew rather serious as she to turned to face him.

“Prove it,” she spoke in a low seductive tone as her beautiful brown eyes feel upon his lips.

“You don’t mean that,” Chris replied finding himself drawn to the full pout of her darkened lips.  He noticed he way they were curled just right displaying their fullness as she made a point to lean in closer to him.

“Don’t I?” Eve challenged in a low whisper as Chris found himself drawn to her, intoxicated by her very essence as he too moved in closer wrapped up in the moment as he thought about holding her, kissing her.  Eve moved in closer to him dropping her empty martini glass to the floor before feeling a breath between them as she spoke up again, “well, what are you waiting for Chris?”

Chris watched her for a long moment before discarding his half empty glass and hearing it clang upon the ground as he extended his arms out to her drawing her to him tightly.  He felt the warmth of her body to his as she moved over his lap eagerly tasting the fire behind his kiss.  Instinctively he found his hands traveling over her body needing to memorize her curves as the sweetness of her kiss ignited a heat far beyond anything he’d ever known as she burned him to the core.  He moved his fingers through her dark hair easing her further into the whirlwind of passion they’d found with one another in that moment as they held onto one another.

“I need you Chris,” Eve breathed in between heated kisses as she slowly slipped her hands over his body wanting to feel him, to learn all there was about this man she’d grown to desire from afar.  She plucked a few buttons open on his shirt and her lips swiftly followed the path her fingers had once traveled a few short seconds earlier.

“Eve,” he whispered her name feeling her move over him in such an exquisite motion as he gave in to the feelings she was bringing forth in him.  He threaded his fingers through her hair lost in the intoxication brought on by her touch, when suddenly it hit him what was happening.  The drinks, the eagerness behind her kisses, the way she was touching him.  He opened his eyes abruptly and reached out to stop her, “Eve don’t.”

“What?” she asked seeing the strain on his face as she looked up at him.

“Don’t do this Eve,” Chris repeated wondering himself why he was saying this now when having Eve was what he’d always wanted.  To be with her was something he’d always needed and yet he was turning her away.  He wanted to kick himself, but more so he knew he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he allowed things to continue in this fashion.  He reached out to touch her seeing the confusion behind her eyes.

The moment it seemed to last for an eternity as he gently cupped her face in his hands.  He found her questioning eyes staring back at his with a surprise he hadn’t quite expected from her before.  Gently brushing the pad of his thumb against he defined cheek bone, he let out a slight sigh.  Wanting her like this was going to make this all the more difficult and yet, in holding her like this, seeing that lost look in her eyes, he knew he was doing the right thing.

“Chris?” she questioned again as if bewilderment had overtaken her senses upon receiving his refusal.

“Why won’t you let me in?” Chris questioned easing his finger over the softness of her skin as he felt her arm propped up against his leg.

“That’s what I’m trying to do,” Eve answered lightly with her lips curling into a slight pout.

“No Eve, this isn‘t about allowing me access into you.  It‘s about pushing me away,” Chris disagreed with her as he saw the desperation behind her attempt to seduce him.  A slight frown swept across his lips, “why this?”

“I want you Chris,” Eve explained again trying to make her intentions clearer still as she moved her slender fingers over the inseam of his pant leg gently easing it over his thigh.

“No,” He shook his head fighting the urges struggling to overtake him as he pressed his right hand over hers, “not like this Eve.”

“I--I don’t understand,” she stammered a bit finding herself unclear on how to respond to him.

“This isn’t what I want,” Chris explained lightly watching the confusion cloud her over as he swept a darkened lock of her silky hair from her face giving light to her sad eyes, “not like this and if you really look inside yourself you’ll see that this isn’t what you want either.”

“Don’t you find me attractive?” Eve questioned drawing back a bit as she shifted on her knees.

“Eve, I think the answer is fairly obvious,” Chris reminded her thinking back to his now painful reminder of how eagerly his body had responded to her touch, to her attentions.  He closed his eyes for a brief moment struggling to pull together the strength to fight this aching lingering need for her.  With a heavy sigh, he fixed his gaze upon her again gently caressing her with his eyes before bringing his index finger over her lips.

“Then what’s the problem?” Eve inquired pressing a light kiss over the pad of his finger.

“The problem is when I find myself lost in you, longing for your lips, to drink up your kisses,” Chris paused once again cursing himself for allowing things to happen as they had, “it wasn’t like this.  You weren’t like that--not doing this.”

“But--” she started again a bit uneasy as she searched his eyes again.

“Eve, I’m not Kevin, Scott or like anyone else you‘ve been with before,” he explained with a nod motioning where she’d began this seduction of hers with him, “this shouldn’t be about what you think I need...this is about we need together...”

“I thought we were,” She started again feeling a breath expel from her lungs.

“Eve, in all my fantasies about us,” Chris paused thinking of the moment as it replayed in his mind over and over again, “never once did my dream of our first encounter together include you lost in martinis and on your knees trying to please me.  Granted, it’s a very enticing scenario, but when I have you,” he stroked her cheek tenderly, “I want it to be something to remember, not something like this.”

“Chris,” she began again finding herself at a loss as she turned her eyes away.

“I don’t want you to feel like we’re revisiting the past here Eve,” Chris noticed her slipping away from him as his fingers affectionately eased over her skin, “I want to make love to you in every sense of the word, not have you feel as though you’re performing some sort of duty with me in order to get some kind of compensation.  I want, no I need you to feel as though this is right for you, that we are something that you could invest yourself in.”

“Chris, I can’t bring myself to fall again,” she answered simply still avoiding his eyes as her heart pounded in her chest, “right now it’s out of the question.”

“I won’t settle for anything less,” Chris stated clearly as he felt the distance between them, “Eve, I want to make love to you, more than you can imagine, but unless it’s something we can share on all levels, I won’t force it.  I refuse to accept anything less when I know the depth of my dreams.”

“A dream isn’t real,” Eve reminded him turning her eyes towards his again.

“A dream is what you make of it Eve,” Chris answered finding himself lost in her eyes, “and I’d like to find a way to make all of yours come true if you’d let me.”

I know you are nervous
But take it from me
Cause you deserve so much more than you receive
Listen to your heart and let it show
Don't hold on to your pain
Just let it go, let it go

Don't have to stay with someone
That makes you cry
You'll end up killing all the love you have inside
Can't hope to see the sun
If you don't open your eyes
Girl don't let real love pass you by....

“Eve please,” Chris urged as he locked the door behind them, “don’t do this.”

“Chris, I’m not changing my mind,” Eve replied unable to face what was happening inside of her as she noted the pain in his features, “please don’t ask me to do this.”

“Eve, I love you,” Chris continued painfully as she turned away facing the mirror once again.  His eyes fell upon her long white gown as she stood before him ready to pledge her life to another man, to give her heart to someone else, to walk out of his life again forever, “Eve, I’m begging you.  Don’t turn away from what we have together.”

“Chris, I’m marrying him today and there’s nothing you can do to change that,” Eve explained closing her eyes to keep her tears from showing, “there’s nothing that is going to stop that from happening.”

“What about your heart Eve?” Chris asked reaching for her arm as he turned her around to face him, “what about how you feel for me?”

“Chris, what I feel for you...if I felt for you....”

“Don’t even try to deny it Eve,” Chris cut her off determined, “after everything we’ve been through, don’t you dare stand before me and tell me that you don’t love me, that you don’t feel anything for me because I know the truth.  I see it in your eyes.  I can feel it when you’re next to me.  Eve, I’m not letting you walk away this time.”

“You don’t have a choice,” Eve blurted out trying to keep from letting him see the truth.  She was trying to deny it to herself as he stood before her pleading with her not to do this, but how could she walk away?  How could she give it all up for something she wasn’t sure about in her heart?

“Yes I do,” Chris interrupted her thoughts, “We do Eve.  Together we have all the choices in the world and right now the best thing you can do is not limit our options.  You can’t marry Ian.”

“Chris, how many times do I have to explain this to you,” Eve asked painfully, “I love him.”

“Not like you love me,” Chris blurted out searching her eyes as he desperately tried to reach her, “you could never love him like you love me.  What we have.  Eve, words can’t even begin to define the power of what it is we have between us.”

“I promised Ian that I would share my life with him,” she replied tearfully, “he’s what makes me happy.”

“No Eve, he’s what you think you need to make you happy, but happiness is right here standing before you staring you straight in the eyes and if you walk away from it now,” he paused, “Eve if you walk away from this now, then you’re more blind than I’d imagined you were.”

“Chris, I can’t do this.  I can’t not marry Ian,” Eve answered tearfully as he reached out to her.

“Can’t or won’t Eve?”

“Chris, why are you doing this to me?” she questioned overcome by her tears, “why now?”

“Because you wouldn’t listen before.  Not with Scott, not with Kevin and this time I’m not giving you an option to shut me out,” Chris informed her passionately, “Before you did what you could to ensure that I didn’t set you straight, that I wouldn’t make you come to your senses, but you know that only I can do that.  I can reach you in places that no one else has ever been able to do before and I know, with all that I am, I know that we’re meant to be together Eve and you know it too.”

“Chris......” she stammered a bit as she heard the pounding on the door and she heard Ian’s voice among the others trying to get inside the room to her.

“Don’t listen to them Eve,” Chris urged bringing her hand over his heart as he found himself wanting so desperately to reach her, “listen to this.  Listen to what really matters and just allow yourself to be with me.”

“Chris,” she found herself caving in as the door burst open and Ian rushed in along with Garcia and Taggart.

“Get him out of here,” Ian instructed as Eve watched Garcia and another officer prying him from her.

“Eve listen to your heart,” Chris begged of her as they pulled him towards the door, “I love you.  Eve, I love you. Eve....Eve!”

“Wait,” she called out chasing after him as Ian reached out to her.

“Eve, what are you doing?” Ian asked painfully as he saw the look in her eyes, “oh God, Ramsey wasn’t lying, was he?”

“Ian, I can’t just let him go like this,” Eve answered tearfully, “I’m sorry,” she apologized before rushing out after Garcia hearing Chris putting up a fight all the way.

“I’m not going anywhere,” his voice could be heard as Eve rushed off in the direction of the sounds, “I’m not leaving Eve here.”

“You don’t have a choice Ramsey,” Garcia replied as Eve heard a struggling followed by something a loud popping sound as she saw Chris laying on the ground at the back of the church.

“No, oh God no,” she cried out rushing over to him and dropping to her knees to scoop him up in her arms as she held him to her.  She turned her eyes to Garcia and the other officer as the tears streamed down her face, “what have you done?” she screamed out at them as she looked to Chris once again, “Don’t do this baby.  Don’t leave me Chris,” she pleaded with him as she applied pressure to his wound, “Please don’t leave me.”

Don't have to stay with someone
That makes you cry
You'll end up killing all the love you have inside
Can't hope to see the sun
If you don't open your eyes
Girl don't let real love pass you by

Oh yeah
Girl don't let real love pass you by
You can find a love you need
If you set your heart free
Girl...
Don't have to stay with someone
That makes you cry
Don't be discouraged baby
Don't let real love pass you by......

Eve burst through the doors of GH fighting to keep up with the paramedics as she tried to remain at Chris’ side after he’d been shot back at the church.  She’d ridden along in the ambulance and now as she saw him fighting for his life, nothing mattered more than reaching him, then bringing him back to her.

“Chris, don’t you dare leave me,” Eve blurted out overcome by her tears as she saw slipping in and out of consciousness, “Chris I’m begging you.  I need you,” she reached for his hand squeezing it as she looked at him, “Chris please I love you.”

“Eve, you have to let go here,” Frank instructed as they wheeled him into the OR.

“I’m not leaving him,” Eve blurted out as Karen rushed to her side.

“Eve, we’re going to do all that we can, but you have to stay right here,” Karen explained to her friend as she followed Frank inside and Eve was left to watch the man that she loved barely hanging on by a thread.

“Please God,” Eve begged as she wrapped her arms around her body, “please don’t let me lose him.  Please not now....not when we have the rest of our lives ahead of us.”

“Eve,” Gabriella called out to her as she rushed into the corridor, “how’s Chris?”

“I don’t know,” Eve cried harder, “they wouldn’t let me go in there.”

“I heard what happened at the wedding,” Gabriella replied as Eve broke down before her, “how could they do that?”

“He just came to tell me he loved me,” Eve cried out, “he just wanted me to see just how much he wanted to be with me, to show me that we were meant to be together,” Eve turned her eyes towards the OR, “and now, now I could lose him.”

“You can’t say that Eve.  You don’t know that,” Gabriella tried to assure her as the tears spilled down Eve’s cheeks.

“Don’t you see?  If he’s gone, then there’s no point in any of this?  Gabriella, I love him.  I know that I need him more than anyone I’ve ever needed in my life and now, now he could be taken from me at any moment and there’s not a thing I can do about it.  He doesn’t know that I want to spend the rest of my life with him.  He begged me to just listen to my heart and I couldn’t do that for him, and now,” she turned her eyes back to the OR, “now it’s too late to tell him just how much he does mean to me.  It’s too late to show him that he was everything to me.  I love him Gabriella.”

“I know you do Eve,” Gabriella listened sympathetically.

“No, you can’t possibly know how much he means to me because I couldn’t even admit that to myself until now,” Eve replied overcome by her tears as she pressed her hand to the glass of the window of the doors to the OR.  She closed her eyes thinking of all the times they’d shared together, all the moments she’d let slip by and how she’d do anything to get them back again.  If she could only find a way to bring him back to her heart.  If only she could make up for all the mistakes she’d made over the years, “I love you Chris,” she whispered as her cheeks stung with hot tears, “I love you so much.”

“Eve,” Karen called out to her as she opened the other door emerging from the OR as she noticed the blood covered over her friend‘s otherwise flawless white gown.

“Karen,” Eve looked to her friend desperately as she wiped at her own face, “how is he?”

“Eve,” Karen sighed, “Eve, I’m sorry.  I‘m so sorry.”

Don't have to stay with someone
That makes you cry
You'll end up killing all the love you have inside
Can't hope to see the sun
If you don't open your eyes
Girl don't let real love pass you by

Don't have to stay with someone
That makes you cry
You'll end up killing all the love you have inside
Can't hope to see the sun
If you don't open your eyes
Girl don't let real love pass you by

Now finding herself overcome with a great many emotions, Eve stood at the front of the church trying to block out all the horrors that had taken place.  Every time she closed her eyes, she found herself overcome with the many thoughts of the shooting and how she’d had that moment with Chris, how they’d had that time together and still they’d wasted so much.  She felt the tears building in her eyes once again as the thought of Chris filled her mind.

“Eve,” Karen spoke out to her lightly, “are you okay?”

Eve nodded unable to find the words as she heard the music die down from the procession and she took in another breath.

“You’re sure,” Karen asked again as she turned her eyes to the priest’s understanding eyes and Karen took a step back wondering if Eve was really ready to go through with this considering what had happened with Chris.

“Eve,” The priest spoke to her in a soft, sympathetic tone as he noted the tracks of tears down her face, “shall we proceed?”

“I think it would be best,” Eve nodded knowing that there was no more delaying this as now was the time, the moment and she had to do this, not merely out of obligation, but because this was where she was meant to be.  She was to be here in this moment despite the road that had brought her here.

“Alright,” the priest nodded before turning his eyes to the rest of the church, “dearly beloved..”

“Wait a second,” Eve said tearing her eyes away from the priest as she looked to the man beside her.

“Having second thoughts?” Chris asked lightly as he saw the tears rushing down her face.

“About us?” she shook her head as her gaze drifted to his cane back up to his eyes again, “never.”

“Then what is it?” Chris questioned searching her eyes as he reached out to gently touch her face.

“I just wanted you to know how much I love you,” Eve explained as a smile fell upon her lips.  She reached out to touch him making sure that he was still there with her.

“I love you too,” Chris whispered leaning into her touch.

“You’re everything to me Ramsey,” Eve explained leaning forward to press a kiss onto his lips as the priest cleared his throat.

“Dr. Lambert, we haven’t gotten to that part yet,” the priest reminded her.

“Consider this a preview of things to come,” Chris replied dropping his cane as he took Eve into his arms kissing her once again as the two realized they were finally where they were meant to be.  He pulled back slightly, “ready to begin this part of our lives Lambert?”

“I was born ready for this moment Ramsey,” she smiled overjoyed at the idea of becoming Mrs. Ramsey at last, “I love you Chris and nothing is ever going to change that.”

“That’s just what I wanted to hear,” Chris smiled at her as he squeezed her hand, “now let’s make this official,” he whispered as they turned to the priest ready to begin their lives together.

Don't you let nothing
Don't let no one take you away from love
Don't let real love pass you by
You'll see I know, I know, I know
You'll be alright
Don't let real love pass you by
You just can believe in love, in love, in love, in love
Don't let real love pass you by
Oh yeah
Don't let real love pass you by
Ooh, yeah
Don't let real love pass you by
Don't let, don't let, don't let, don't let
Don't let, don't let, don't let, don't let
Don't let real love pass you by
Oh yeah, oh
Don't let real love pass you by...
