Linda McCartney gig!

In April 1999, George attended to the memorial concert for Paul McCartney's deseased wife Linda. George thanked Chrissie for inviting him to sing there, and put in that the evening meant something else to him too - because of his mother who "lost the same fight as Linda lost" as he put it.

It was a rather funny beginning, George came out onstage, and the audience were screaming and clapping and whistling, and he stood there trying to calm everyone down - not too successful, however. Well, they were almost quiet when Sinead O'Connor ran up to him from behind and threw a pair of undies at him. He finished his "thank you" speech, before he bowed down and picked them up, studied them before he said: "Whose nickers are those" and the audience laughed. (The pants looked like something his grandmother would use...) Take a look for yourself:

"Well, she must be very unattractive", he continued then started laughing once again - because Sinead came back onstage and told him they were hers. He kissed her and a "woooooo" came from the visitors. He smiled sweet, and said: "She says I can keep them"... Then he got serious and began with the reason why he was there and so on.

He started with a wonderful, perfect, sensitive version of "The Long And Winding Road". Personally I think his version is better than the original. All Beatles fans will probably hate me for that, but...

The long and winding road, that leads to your door. Will never disappear, I've seen that road before. It always lead me here, lead me to your door...

Anyhow, when that song was done, he told everybody to "feel free to make the real noise, ok?" and asked "everybody get up, come on!" I guess noone expected to hear "Faith" that evening, but he sure looked as if he had a great time during the song. He acted like a "kid" again (sorry, George, I know you don't want to be reminded of the "faith-days", but you looked so healthy and alive!)

"Thanks a lot, I'm very happy to be here. Please, don't scream..."Here comes Sinead ready to have some fun...And man, did she get it...

He did sing "Elanor Rigby" too, but because he thought he didn't do a good enough job on it, he didn't want it to be on the TV-version of the show. (Don't be so hard on yourself, George! I still haven't heard one bad live song by you! And I've heard quite a few...)

Anyway, you did a great job on that, George.
