"I don't want to lose you."
                                 -Leo

One night in early February, Piper is working at P3. The club is busy and it has obviously been a hectic night for the young owner. She is coughing as she cuts fruit for the cocktails, and appears to be sick. A few minutes later Phoebe arrives with a big announcement. She has just enrolled in her first college classes. Unfortunately, she's a little confused and has signed up for seven electives. Piper looks shocked but soon Phoebe has turned her attention away from her courses. She's concerned about Piper who hasn't been feeling well all day. But Piper assures her that she is okay.
As Buckland's Prue and Jack are working late into the night trying to authenticate a Monet for auction. Prue is beginning to believe that it isn't real. But Jack is paying more attention to Prue than to the painting. He wants to know where they stand in their relationship. Luckily for Prue, Mr. Caldwell comes in before they can get too far into that discussion.
Back at P3, Piper is rushing around, worried that the club might be over its occupancy limit. Phoebe is following her through the maze of people, trying to get her to slow down. Piper is about to tell her that she's fine when she suddenly gets dizzy. She glances around for a moment then collapses onto the floor. Phoebe kneels down beside her, trying to revive her sister. When she can't, she yells for someone to call 911.
At the hospital the next morning Prue is waiting by Piper's bedside for her to wake up. She finally does only to realize where she is. No one knows exactly what is wrong with her but both sisters seem sure that its nothing too serious. They'll just have to wait for the test results to come back.
Phoebe, meanwhile, is anxiously trying to get word on those test results. While waiting she befriends a sick little boy with a ninja doll. She tells him that the ninja doll has powers, the power to freeze, the power to move things with his mind, and the power to kickbox the heck out of someone (Hmm, does this sound familiar?). Then Dr. Williamson, an infectious disease specialist, shows up. He and Phoebe go into Piper's room where he announces that she has Arroyo Fever. She caught it from a bug in the fruit that she had been cutting. Phoebe asks him if it's life threatening and he doesn't really give her a straight answer (this is always a bad sign). Still, Piper doesn't seem too worried, at least not in front of her sisters. She tells Prue to go back to work and Phoebe to tell Dan what has happened.
Back at work, Prue isn't sure what she should be doing. All she can think about are the new test results Dr. Williamson has promised them. Jack tries to comfort her. But then she gets a call from the hospital. She quickly calls Phoebe who is at home with Dan. They all rush to the hospital only to find that Piper has slipped into a coma. Dr. Williamson tells them in no uncertain terms that if Piper doesn't pull out of it she will die.
Once at home, Prue leads the way to the attic, determined to find a spell that will save her sister. Phoebe wants to call Leo, even though Piper has already told them not to. Reluctantly Prue agrees with her plan and they yell his name until he appears. Their whitelighter, however, cannot help. He's been forbidden to. As much as he wants to save Piper, there's nothing he can do. As soon as he's gone they revert back to Prue's plan. They arrive at the hospital and quickly cast the Awakening spell, using Piper's blood and the ninja doll that Phoebe has borrowed from the little boy. After a few agonizing seconds Piper wakes up. The doctor is stunned. But what none of them seem to notice is that the ninja doll that Phoebe threw away, is now alive, and spreading the disease all over the hospital.
Later that night at P3, Piper questions her sisters about the spell. They admit what they've done, but since they haven't seen any consequences so far they aren't too worried about the personal gain aspect. Prue decides to go back to work while Phoebe and Piper stay behind to clean up. Phoebe watches in a strange fascination as Piper rushes around the club without ever getting tired. Phoebe's found their first consequence.
At Buckland's Prue is dismayed to find that the Monet is indeed a fake. Jack tries to convince her to go with it, to ignore what she's found. As he says, nothing lives up to that kind of scrutiny. Once again we are left to wonder whether they are talking about the painting or their relationship. At this point, it seems like they're talking about both.
With the sudden outbreak of Arroyo fever at the hospital, Dr. Williamson sends the CDC after Piper and her sisters. They are put under quarantine so that the good doctor can study them and figure out how Piper survived. As soon as he is gone, the sisters begin to discuss what has happened. None of them have slept which seems to be an obvious consequence of the Awakening spell. And now more people are sick. Piper decides that they should reverse the spell and call Leo to save her. Prue and Phoebe are forced to tell her that they already tried that. But Piper still insists that they reverse the spell. She can't let anyone die because of her. Finally Prue agrees and astral projects back into the attic. She memorizes the reversal spell then enlists Phoebe's help in order to cast it. They chant it a few times before Piper drops to the floor. The doctors rush in and place her on a bed, checking her over. As Prue and Phoebe watch Piper's heart rate drops and then disappears. She is dying.
As everyone tries frantically to save Piper, her spirit lifts from the bed. Suddenly she is facing a wonderful white light. Leo walks towards her and holds out his hands. If she takes them, then he can heal her. But she has to hurry before anyone finds out. Piper hesitates then finally takes his hands.
Prue and Phoebe are crying as Dr. Williamson pronounces their sister's death. Then suddenly the heart monitor starts to beep and Piper takes a breath. They run to her side as she wakes up. Dan has joined them in the room but hears her call out Leo's name as she regains consciousness. The doctor meanwhile, is stunned once again. Piper should have been dead. And now he's determined to find out why she is not.
Prue, having had a "wake-up call" decides to quit Bucklands. She can't bring herself to lie about the Monet and she doesn't like the way Buckland's has been run since the takeover. Unfortunately this also puts an end to her relationship with Jack. While the youngest Halliwell is finally moving forward in life, the oldest has suddenly found herself single and unemployed.
At P3, Phoebe welcomes Prue into her jobless world. She's proud of her oldest sister. As for Piper, she is pretty much back to normal with no sign of the disease that basically killed her. As they are talking, Leo shows up and Piper goes over to talk to him. She soon discovers that Leo's wings have been clipped as a punishment for saving her. He is mortal now. Piper isn't sure what to say. But as she stands there, Leo gives her a very important announcement. Now that he's mortal, he's come back to fight for her.
