"Melinda Warren, blood of our blood,
our great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother...
we summon thee."
-Prue, Piper, and Phoebe
It's the 1700's
and the witch trials are in full force. Melinda Warren, a young mother,
has been accused of witchcraft by Matthew Tate, a man she had loved. Well
it turns out that Matthew was a warlock intent on stealing her powers.
Once he has done so he tells the townspeople that she is a witch. She's
arrested and is set to be burned at the stake. Before this happens though,
Matthew pays an ill advised visit. Melinda, ready for her revenge, curses
him into a locket where he is supposed to remain for eternity.
Hundreds of
years later, Rex Buckland delivers a tray of antiques to Prue's office.
There sits the locket that Matthew is trapped in. Once Prue is alone, she
opens it and is shocked when Matthew appears. He tricks her into using
her power on him, and then copies it. This both gives him her power and
makes him immune to it. Matthew demands her other two powers then realizes
that there are more witches like her, each with one of the powers Melinda
possessed. He jumps out her window in search of her sisters.
Not long after,
Andy and Morris are investigating the mysterious man. As Andy looks up
several stories to the broken window, he realizes that the man jumped from
Prue's office. He doesn't seem all that surprised.
Over at Halliwell
manor, Leo is working under the kitchen sink. Piper is only too happy to
help him as he asks her for various tools. It is obvious to everyone, except
maybe Leo, that Piper has a
thing
for him. Phoebe comes in, but Piper quickly pushes her out of the kitchen.
As they stand just out of Leo's earshot, Phoebe encourages her sister to
make the first move. But Piper's never asked a guy out before and she's
afraid of being rejected. Finally the two return to the kitchen. Phoebe
nearly spills tea on the handyman, but Piper freezes him. As she rushes
to catch the tea before it unfreezes, Phoebe teases her about "having her
way" with Leo. Piper doesn't appreciate her comments. Then finally Prue
comes in and directs them up to the attic.
Back at Bucklands,
Rex and Hannah are interviewed by the cops. Then they return to his office
where they discuss the best way to find the warlock. Obviously they have
been plotting against the sisters for awhile now. They're responsible for
Matthew's locket finding its way to Prue's desk.
Up in the attic
Phoebe has a premonition about Melinda cursing Matthew. Everyone's a little
surprised,
since this is the first time she's ever seen the past. And Phoebe's more
than a little disappointed that her new extended power hasn't allowed her
to fly. :) They search through the Book of Shadows and find information
about Melinda and her curse. They quickly learn that Matthew intends to
kill them all in order to destroy the Warren line. Piper's ready to hide,
but her sisters just want to know how to get rid of the warlock. Soon the
doorbell rings and there's Andy, wanting to know where Prue is. He's a
little cold and Phoebe refuses to let him in, telling him to get a warrant.
Prue is rather unhappy that now both a warlock and the SFPD are after her.
Phoebe finally suggests an answer to their problem. She wants to bring
Melinda back to help them redo the curse.
Back in the
attic, Phoebe has found the spell to bring her to the future. But it requires
each sister to give a drop of her blood. Phoebe readily pricks her finger
and Prue does so also, although with much more reluctance. Piper, however,
refuses. She can't stand the sight of blood. Finally she
relents
but Phoebe must prick her finger for her. Then they say the spell and Melinda
appears.
Phoebe tries
to give Melinda a quick orientation for life in the new millennium. She
gets her dressed in some more modern clothing and then Prue and Piper join
her. After a few minutes, Leo comes in. Noticing Piper's stare, Melinda
tells her that he is a treasure. Piper wants to know why her ancestor is
telling her this. Melinda doesn't say anything else.
After searching
out and killing a few San Francisco Halliwells, Matthew still hasn't found
the powers he's seeking. Rex and Hannah track him down, telling him that
they're the ones who helped release him.
Melinda and the sisters sit down at the table and talk about her life.
She explains what happened to her, and how her daughter, Prudence, continued
the family line. She also tells them
about
Matthew's ability to copy powers. Then they search in the Book and find
the curse again. All they need are the ingredients. Piper and Phoebe will
go to Quake for the herbs and Prue will try and find the spotted owl feather.
Rex and Hannah
show Matthew pictures of each sister. Then they send him to Quake to get
Piper's power. But when he gets there he copies Phoebe's instead. As he
takes it, Phoebe has a premonition about Melinda, and he realizes that
she too is in the future. Piper and Phoebe call to warn Melinda, but she
can't figure out how to pick up the phone. And then Matthew is there. As
he grabs her, he has a premonition about them doing the curse. He decides
to kill Prue to keep this from happening. But Melinda lies to him and tell
him she is at the zoo.
Piper and Phoebe
return to the house, happy to find Melinda safe. They have to hurry now.
Prue is at the museum getting the feather. Once she gets back they'll be
able to finish the curse.
Matthew, meanwhile,
is back with Rex and Hannah. They want him to find Piper, but he insists
on killing Prue to keep from being cursed back into the locket. Rex convinces
him to go to the house, where he will be able to find both sisters. And
just to help him along, he sends Matthew there with a gun.
Prue gets out
of the museum with the feather. But Andy's been following her and now he
demands to know why she stole it. She refuses to tell him and as they sit
in his car he threatens to arrest her. Prue pleads with him to let her
go then uses her power to make his air bag explode. As Andy is temporarily
trapped in his seat, Prue makes her escape.
Back at the
manor, Piper, Phoebe and Melinda are getting everything ready for Prue's
return. But then Matthew shows up again. He grabs Piper and holds a gun
to her head, threatening to kill her if she doesn't use her power. She
refuses and he threatens Phoebe, knowing that Piper is more
protective
of her sister than she is of herself. But then Prue bursts in. She hits
Matthew with a chair as he releases Piper. Then she finally freezes him
and they do the curse. Matthew Tate is back in the locket.
Rex and Hannah
are obviously a little upset over the loss of the warlock and the Halliwells
powers. They decide that its time to go after the sisters themselves.
Leo comes over
the next day to work at the house. Piper comes down the stairs and asks
him if he can come back tomorrow, since they're trying to get Melinda ready
to leave. Then as he is about to go, Piper finally works up the courage
to ask him out. He readily accepts her invitation and tells her to call
him. Piper smiles and goes back up to the attic where Melinda and her sisters
are waiting. Prue, Piper and Phoebe say their goodbyes to their great,
great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother, and then reluctantly
send her back. All of the sisters are a little depressed at her departure,
but Prue reminds them that they can always bring her back.
