"I just read from the book and -wham-
I'm Tabitha!"
-Phoebe
Phoebe Halliwell
is the youngest and most daring of the family, although not for long as
another sister has yet to be found. She is also the most eager to learn
and grow as a witch. Phoebe is the spell caster, the potion maker, and
the expert on the Book of Shadows. But she is also the sister who began
with a passive power, the power of premonition. Thankfully for her, her
powers began to expand as she entered her third year as a witch so that
now she can also levitate.
As the youngest,
Phoebe is perceived to be the most irresponsible and the least mature.
But things have changed since she discovered the family secret and she
is starting to get her life on track. Even Prue seeks advice from her now,
and Phoebe offers it readily. She is the one to go to if you need to be
cheered up, and her humor often lightens up a bad situation. Still, Phoebe
always seems to be on the edge. There is a dark side within her that shows
up every so often. But most of the time, Phoebe is the happy, cheerful,
enthusiastic girl who insists that she'll always want to be a witch.
Before moving back
in with her sisters, Phoebe was off in New York, searching for their long
lost father. Her relationship with middle sister Piper was still good,
but she and Prue were hardly on speaking terms. So when Phoebe finally
did return home she received a chilly reception from the oldest Halliwell.
However, on her first night back, while playing an old spirit board game
with Piper, Phoebe was stunned to find the pointer spelling out the word
attic. While Piper freaked out and Prue went to check the fuse box, Phoebe
went up there and discovered a dusty old volume called the Book of Shadows.
Curious, she opened the cover and read the incantation on the first page,
thereby calling up their powers. After that, nothing was ever the same.
Unlike her sisters,
Phoebe was never afraid of her powers or her new identity as a witch. She
embraced it with open arms. It was in the normal half of her life where
she struggled the most. Often unemployed, she went through a series of
jobs which never seemed to work out. She did, however, patch things up
with Prue and managed to add a little more fun to the Halliwell household.
Along the way she also learned to love her passive power and began to understand
its importance.
Phoebe did have
some strange experiences though. During an important dinner party which
Prue was hosting, Phoebe was possessed by a creature called the Woogyman.
She managed to ruin the dinner and nearly kill both of her sisters, before
breaking through the demon's hold on her. It was then that Phoebe began
to realize that she had a darker side. That was why the demon chose her.
This dark side
became all the more clear when the sisters traveled to the future, only
to find Phoebe on death row for murder. Phoebe had a sobering experience
as she recalled what her future self had done, using her powers to punish
the guilty instead of protecting the innocent. She ended up telling her
sisters to let the state execute her. They did. Phoebe was burned alive,
but fortunately for her, this was the trigger that sent them back to their
present. In this way Phoebe had a shot at changing her future, and the
future of the world.
A few months
after that Phoebe enrolled in college, ready to get on with her life. One
day though she found herself having premonitions about her past self, an
evil past self who had been killed in the 1920's. Phoebe went back in time
and found that her past self was trying to kill her cousins, who bore an
uncanny resemblance to Prue and Piper. Phoebe was forced to own up to the
fact that she had turned evil once before, and that there was always a
chance that it could happen again. But Prue assured her that she was still
a wonderful person who had done a lot of great things since returning home.
But still, it was hard for Phoebe to get past that glimpse into her darker
half.
After this little
experience though, Phoebe's life has only gotten better. She aced her college
exams and even managed to save the day a few times. She is still unattached,
after following Piper's lead by going after the wrong man, in this case
a character from a black and white film. This was resolved quickly though
when she had to leave him behind on his twenty foot movie screen.
A summer went
by before Phoebe finally got what she wanted, an active power. Levitating,
about as close to flying as she could get, meant that she finally had an
edge in the fighting. At the same time Phoebe met her dream man, an attractive
ADA named Cole Turner. She fell for him hard, but found out too late that
he was the demon, Belthazor, sent by the Source to destroy the Charmed
Ones. As she realized this, she resolved herself to kill him, but was unable
to after he professed his love for her. Somehow he seemed willing to give
up his evil ways to be with her, so she saved him and sent him away. But
this created a problem when she lied, telling her sisters that she had
indeed vanquished him. This secret would haunt her for weeks afterward,
eventually coming between her and her family.
Not long after,
Phoebe was thrilled when their father showed up. Unfortunately his presence
was yet another thing Phoebe had kept from her sisters. But they quickly
got over this when the family was happily reunited. Unfortunately the family
bond was tested when Phoebe finally revealed that Cole was alive. Piper
was quick to forgive once Phoebe told Prue, but the eldest Halliwell felt
betrayed. After a dance on the dark side for all of the Halliwells, Prue
began to forgive as she realized evil's allure. Now the only test for Phoebe
was whether Cole could resist it.
Once Cole went
undercover to get the goods on the Source's plan, Piper and Prue began
to wonder whether he could be good. But Phoebe stood by him, sure that
he was still helping them. She started to make a potion to take away his
evil half, but destroyed it when Cole killed a witch. What she hadn't realized
was that his old boss had forced him to do so in order to split the two
up. She discovered this after being transformed into a banshee, a demon
who tracks down those in pain. She eventually found Cole, who was suffering
badly from their break-up. She became Phoebe once more and he explained
himself before disappearing. Unfortunately this led to a series of tragic
events that would affect all the sisters.
A week later
Prue and Piper were nearly killed while vanquishing a demon. Phoebe called
for Leo who was able to save them. But shortly after she journeyed down
to the underworld, intent on bringing Cole back. Leo eventually went after
her when the media caught on to the Halliwell's secret. Meanwhile the Source
suddenly appeared on the scene giving Cole the news he didn't want to believe.
While Phoebe and Leo were gone, Piper had been shot and killed, leaving
Phoebe with a horrible choice. If she stayed in the underworld with the
Source, time would be reset to the morning. If she did not, time would
continue and Piper would be dead forever. She chooses to stay on the condition
that Cole goes back to warn Prue and Piper of the demon that hurt them
that morning. And so the deal is made and time is reset. Unfortunately
Cole is held up, leaving the two elder Halliwells horribly injured, while
Phoebe is trapped deep in the underworld.
