"Dammit Phoebe, I love you..."
-Cole
When the Charmed
Ones first met Cole Turner, it was not under the best of circumstances.
A girl had been killed at the hands of a demon and Cole was the district
attorney determined to learn the truth about what had happened. The only
bright side? He was cute enough to get Phoebe thinking about things that
didn't include witchcraft. Almost immediately though everyone else became
suspicious of the DA. They had good reason to be since he had already killed
an evil judge and single handedly destroyed Piper's wedding by informing
those higher up about the event. It turned out that he was Belthazor, half
man and half demon. He was able to change himself into his demon form at
will, but continued to flirt with Phoebe in his human one.
None of this
was known however, when the Halliwell sisters were thrown back in time
during Cole's first attempt to get rid of them. Hoping to kill the first
of their family, Cole didn't count on them outsmarting him with the help
of their ancestors. Luckily for him, the sisters never guessed the identity
of the masked man who'd been after them. But the attraction between him
and Phoebe was even more apparent when Phoebe learned that the name of
her true love began with a C.
Not long after
Prue became worried about Phoebe's deepening relationship, as she began
to suspect that Cole wasn't what he seemed. Strange things had began happening
around the house, and Prue insisted that a demon was after them. She was
thrown off though, when she learned that a stalker had been the cause of
many of the strange occurrences. And thus his secret remained safe.
Cole, having
been chastised more than once for failing at his mission, devised another
plan to destroy the Power of Three. He used their own anger against them,
thereby stripping them of their powers. In the end though, he could not
bring himself to kill them. Another demon however nearly forced him to
do so as he was possessed by it. The Halliwells fought him off and he retreated.
After the Triad threatened to get rid of him, he instead killed them and
became a fugitive from those higher up.
Soon after,
Phoebe began to realize that Cole was missing. While she searched for him,
Prue and Piper attempted to call Belthazor, having made a potion to destroy
him. Instead they found a demon bounty hunter who was also after him. It
was not long before they discovered that Cole and Belthazor were one and
the same. Too late, Phoebe came to the same realization as he transformed
into Belthazor and spirited her away to the cemetery. But once there, he
told her that he loved her. After saving her from the bounty hunter, Phoebe
returned the favor. And then when she finally had a chance to destroy him,
she refused and instead let him go. The only problem... she lied to her
sisters, insisting that she had gotten rid of him.
Phoebe's guilty
conscience forced her to tell Prue and Piper the truth a few weeks later.
Not long after Cole returned. But Phoebe explained that she could not be
with him. Things changed though when Phoebe's life was threatened. Cole
went back in time to help save her and seemed to redeem himself to the
woman he loved. The rest of the family was not so easy to win over. He
got his chance though when Prue was accused of murder right as Piper's
wedding day arrived. Cole caught the killer and got the eldest Halliwell
free just in time to play bridesmaid with Phoebe, thus seeming to assure
his place in the family.
Just as things
were starting to look up for the couple, Cole was sucked back into the
evil underworld, when he returned to investigate a demonic conspiracy.
Unfortunately, even as Phoebe insisted that he was still good, his old
boss attempted to reclaim him. Just as Phoebe was about to rid him of his
evil ways forever, he was forced to kill a witch. Horrified, Phoebe destroyed
the potion that would have freed him then sent him away.
A week past
before Phoebe's own sadness over the break up finally caught up with her.
After a close encounter with a banshee, she became one herself, stalking
those in pain. She ended up finding Cole, who helped her return to her
former self. The two seemed on the verge of making up, but Phoebe allowed
him to leave again.
After nearly
being broken up yet again, Phoebe was determined to get Cole back. She
returned to the underworld, then used a spell to bring the good Cole back
again. Unfortunately she didn't realize the mistake she had made. The Source
had arrived and seemed intent on destroying them. Leo followed her down
when she didn't return. Sadly, Prue could not reach him or her youngest
sister when Piper was shot. The middle Halliwell was rushed to the hospital
but died not long after. After learning this, a desperate Phoebe asked
Cole to get the Source to turn back time. The evil leader agrees, but then
orders one of his men to detain and get rid of them.
