Lisa (U.S.A.) and Christian (Ecuador)

This is their story, from Lisa's email of 20 October 1997:

"Christian and I first met about 3 years ago when I worked with my dad in the summer. I always heard about the guy Chris that works with him. The first day I was there I was in the office building (across the street is the factory- they work at a coat company). as I was walking down the hall, this guy goes to me "you must be Wayne's daughter, I am Chris." I don't remember saying much besides "yes" and "hi".

Well, after a day of working in the office I hated it so I asked my dad if I could work with him in the factory. so for the rest of the summer I did... being the only girl in the factory. I mostly did paper work, helping Chris. He wasn't the greatest dresser back then, to say the least... and I had a boyfriend... (plus I was only 16 and he was 22...) so I was only "Wayne's daughter". We talked a little but nothing much at all. Then it was time to go back to school............

Forward to April '96...... one Sunday my dad just hands me Chris's email address.....knowing I could email from school. I figured why not just write him...so I did the next day at school... the message was so corny... "do you remember me??". Well, he wrote back and from there we started writing everyday. I was having ex-boyfriend problems (wanting him back) and he became my little shrink. I felt I could tell him anything. We wanted to hang out one day but we both were to chicken to bring it up.

Well finally in June my parents decided to get our own PC on home. Chris is a computer wiz, so my dad asked if he would come out here and help us when we get it. since Chris lives 45 minutes from here and they both work there too, Chris slept over and went back to work with my dad. I remember when he first came in, it was so weird but then we ended up staying up til 4 am just talking....after that we talked on the phone, chatted... we were falling for each other. Then we planned a day he would come out... and we have been in love ever since!! The first date was Aug 10... he took the train, got here at 8 and left at 11!! But it was so wonderful.... that's when he first told me he loved me.

We have been through so many good times together. he moved from Ecuador to the US when he was 10, so he wasn't a citizen... but with my help and encouragement he became a citizen in March, and I was right there!!

He just got his license but doesnt have a car, so every weekend he takes the train out to me... I also go out to him but not as often. We always talk about marriage... like I said just above, he always asks me.... all we need is the ring to make it official... we talk what our kids will look like, all that stuff.

Our nationality difference never plays a big role. The only way our nationality difference affects us is with his mother. She only speaks Spanish and she tries to communicate with me, but the only things I say are Muy Bien or Que?!! :). But I think it will be great for our children, to get to know 2 languages.... I always wished I was fluent in Spanish... I hope to learn more."
