E-mail: uteng©rocketmail.com
Jay and I have known each other for 9 years now and been married for almost one year.
Although Jay has lived in the US for about 15 years, his family is very Korean.
We are still trying to figure out our families and culture, but are very comfortable with each other.
We would like to hear from similar couples, it would help me especially to learn what is expected of a Korean daughter-in-law...

Crazy things DO happen when you marry someone from another country!
INS is such a hassle! We have found that working through a lawyer is expensive, but worth it!
There are so many issues to consider- how to raise children, what religion to follow, how to incorporate both cultures.
Whew!

I didn't find any couple with an Arab party, that doesn't mean that they are rare.
Ralfy and I met at the university in Morocco, especially, in the workshop of photography, in November 98.
We aren't married yet, we meet a lot of problems, especially religious ones
Before the marriage, he has to convert to Islam, and we need a lot of time and money only for papers.
Of course he made the convertion, but he is still a student, and here in Morocco we need money for marriage, not only for the "dot" which is an amount of money given by the man to his future wife, but also for the wedding.
We can not do all this, and my family will not let me go with him
My mother told me to wait until he settles down
He is still doing researches for his 'Doctorat' in geology, we don't want to wait, I know that my parents are doing all this to make me forget this union because they don't agree with it...
Now we are hoping to find a solution, I am trying to find a job for 1 year, perhaps would it help us???

Malik and I met in Germany while I was studying abroad with the Universität Hamburg.
It was my first day of school and I was trying to figure out the train schedule.
Malik was leaving to go to the Arbeitsamt.
He saw me and we noticed we were going to miss the train.
He started running as did I.
I fell down the stairs, he came to my rescue, and we both missed the train.
If it weren't for my fall, we wouldn't have met! :)
It is now almost 3 years later. I made it back to Germany and we finally got married in Sonderborg, Denmark this May.
I am working as a translator and Malik is working towards his degree.
We'd love to hear from other Moroccans or other couples whose common language is not the mother tongue of either partner.

I followed my love to France (we met in Buenos Aires) and I'm currently working on a thesis
about 'sentimental migrations'. It doesn't read as well in English.
I realized that most of the literature about international couples in France
was focused on the social perceptions of "mixed marriages" and completely ignore
the administrative problems we face and the positive aspects of being part of an international couple.
Kudos!

We've been dating almost 3 years now and have weathered both good and bad times together.
Being in an interracial relationship can be tough at first, dealing with the differences and family's concerns about it,
but it is the best thing to ev er happen to both of us.
We've learned so much about life and love from each other and it just keeps getting better.
We're planning to get married this winter (2001) in a Hindu ceremony in India
and then have a Christian ceremony here in the US afterwards.
We'd love to talk to other couples in similar relationships.

Harold and I met in the #newbies channel on IRC in February of 1997.
We began e-mailing and finally met in Real Life in August 1997.
Thank goodness that what we had online carried over into Real Life!
We had a wonderful ten days and it was difficult to say goodbye.
I went to The Netherlands in December 1997 and fell in love with the country.
It was there that we decided that I would move there as soon as it was possible.
I returned to California quit my job and sold almost everything I had and spent three months getting ready to move.
In March Harold and I both flew to Michigan so he could meet my family and they were relieved to meet him.
We spent a week there, then arrived in Amsterdam on Friday the 13th.
I love being here and have been taking Dutch lessons.
Yes, there were difficult times and still are, but we work through them.
We were married in Michigan June 26, 1999 and love being a married couple.
And, we just bought a house! So everything is going well for us and neither of us have ever been happier.

Hope to start communication with multi-cultural couples in the same situation.

We met in Toronto, Canada while attending English-as-a-Second Language school.
We fell in love almost immediately and married shortly after.
We have been happily married and have two gorgeous sons.
Now that our children are at the university, we have plenty of time to enjoy life.
In our spare time we go dancing (mostly Latin music), bike, ski, skate, golf
(my husband that is), play pool, walk, and enjoy the company of friends over a good meal.
But most of all we enjoy each others company. And that after 23 years of being together.
It works in spite of all the difference in cultures, if you want to make it work. Cheers!!

We both came to U.S. when we were teenagers.
Both went to high school, college, and grad school in this country.
We actually have quite similar backgrounds, contrary to the common belief.
It seems quite hard for other people to understand though.
I'm hopeful that people will be more open minded as time goes on.
But in the meantime, it's hard when you have to work with people who are not as accepting.

Hi I'm Cathy.
My boyfriend and I have been going out for ten months.
There is a lot of culture differences but I like his way of thinking better than
my used to be and therefore I feel I'm a better person and we get along better.
We still have problems due to the different cultures but we are trying to get through them the best we can.
I know we are not very long together but we are so in love that we can't help
but think of marriage and stuff and that's where the really difficulty comes in.
I want to get married in a Catholic church. I want my children to believe in Jesus as God and so on.
He on the other hand is not soo religious but is dead set on being Muslim and so on.
I'm so scared that this relationship will end when we reach to the point of marriage or just after.
I love him sooo much.
If anyone has any comment or advice please write.
Thank you and God bless.

Greetings, fellow married couples.
We are newlyweds, as of August 7, 1999, and have been together almost two years.
We met in Suwon, South Korea, on a busy street.
We feel that our meeting was destiny.
I (Krista) am 31 years old, and Canadian.
My husband Ik-Sun is 27, and Korean.
We love each other alot.
However, we are finding our personality differences, as well as
our cultural and language differences really difficult to handle.
Sometimes after we fight we feel so alone, and overwhelmed...
like we are the only couple that has these kinds of problems.
Are we crazy or what????? Is there hope for this kind of a situation???
We are not giving up by any means, but we sure could use some support right now..
Any comments or suggestions will be well-received.
Thank you very much!!!!

Ulrike (Germany) and Mohammed (Palestine)
E-mail: biculturel©yahoo.de
Hallochen, mein Name ist Ulrike und ich studiere Erziehungswissenschaft.
Ich habe mich sehr intensiv damit beschäftigt, was
Bikulturell - gemeinsam - gegen Rassismus!
