HUB CONVERSION
Hub Upgrade
add big bearings and hubs to your Fiero using Corvair hubs
BEARING COMPARISON
Letter A = Fiero inner bearing
Letter B = Corvair inner Bearing
Letter C = Fiero inner race
Letter D = Corvair inner Race
Note the larger size of the Corvair inner bearing in comparison to the smaller Fiero unit
The Corvair bearing will take a much larger side load the the stock Fiero unit
There is also a huge difference in size with the front bearing as well
letter A= Fiero
letter B= Corvair
To install the larger Corvair bearings and hub onto the Fiero is very simple .First remove the old bearings and races
and clean out all the old grease . Next take the clean hubs to a local machine shop and have them cut the rear bearing stop back .125" inch that's 1/8 of an inch and the hub moedis done then order in the new bearings front bearing # is
LM11949 and race # is LM11910 the new rear bearing required is # JLM67042 made by Timken only race # is LM67010
YOU DO NOT ENLARGE THE BEARING BORE JUST SET THE BEARING DEEPER INTO THE BORE SO THE BEARING SPACING IS THE SAME AS THE FIERO HUB
next you have to make 2 concentric rings as in (fig 4)
these rings are for enlarging the Fiero seal area to match the Corvair hub
these are press fit over the old seal ring
letter P is for the thin spacer needed for the front bearing it is .032 shim stock rolled to fill in the difference in the bearing inside diam. Fiero is .6850 the new bearing inside diam. is .750 so the shim is needed to take up the space I used thin wall chrome 3/4 tubing that was .032 thick.
now that the parts are ready just install as you would the original with new
bearings , studs and seals and you now have 5 X 4 3/4 Bolt circle to match the back
and here it is installed with new studs and new bearings and all cleaned up
install a new cap and your done
