A man holding two knives and a hatchet was shot during an early morning confrontation with police officers in St. Catharines.
The unidentified victim, 31, was hit in the leg, hand and chest when he refused to drop the hatchet after being cornered by 11 Niagara cops in the parking lot of a Carlton St.-QEW business shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday.
Witnesses said police fired two warning shots before the man lunged at uniformed officers with the hatchet.
The man was hit by three police bullets.
The province's Special Investigations Unit has named three Niagara Regional Police officers as subject officers and eight others as witness officers.
Subject officers' actions are under scrutiny and could result in criminal charges.
SIU spokesman Gail Scala said a seven-member team is investigating.
The victim is listed in serious condition at St. Catharines General hospital, where he has undergone at least one major operation. His injuries have been deemed not life-threatening, police said.
