Native Youth Activist Held In Custody

Secwepemc Woman Refuses To Capitulate On Commitment To Aboriginal Land Rights, Remains In A Kamloops Jail

Native youth movement and local chief describe her decision as "an act of freedom", and say "the people of neskonlith are proud of her"

(Secwepemc Territory, June 27, 2001) The Secwepemc woman who was assaulted by a white man at Sun Peaks on June 25th, and then found herself arrested for mischief, has refused a government offer to leave jail if she promises not to return to Skwelkwek'welt (Sun Peaks).

Nicole Manuel, who was arrested and jailed in Kamloops on Tuesday afternoon, has told her lawyer that she could not voluntarily agree to leave her land in exchange for her release from jail. Her colleagues in the Native Youth Movement are describing Nicole Manuel's stand as "a heroic act of Freedom."

Chief Arthur Manuel of the Neskonlith Indian Band also issued a statement. He says the arrest of Nicole Manuel on the mischief charge, and the Crown's decision to keep the 24 year-old woman in jail, "only highlights the fact that this is a political attempt by the State to break the Native Youth Movement. She was arrested on a pretext and now the Crown is trying to blackmail her into leaving Skwelkwek'welt, which is her home."

Chief Manuel pointed out that no such restriction on returning to his home in Sun Peaks was put on the white man who assaulted her. "They have targeted Nicole Manuel because she is one of the leaders of the Native Youth Movement," he said. "This is obviously political."

"What they do not seem to understand is the depth of the commitment Native People have to their land," Chief Manuel added. "This is a message to all British Columbians who believe that Native People will sell out their birthright or extinguish their rights to their traditional territories. At 24 years old, Nicole Manuel is giving a lesson to all of us. She has made a very tough decision in giving up her personal liberty in the cause of Freedom for her People at a time when we are entering an era of tough decisions over our future. The people of Neskonlith are proud of her."
