During March break of 1998, my daughter and I were visiting relatives in the Greely area. We left our uncle's home on John Quinn Road traveling to our other uncle's home in Greely. It was about 10 am on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning. My daughter, age 17 was driving our 1985 Buick Skylark. My daughter is a black woman.
We accidentally drove right past my uncle's house where his kids were in the window looking out for us. We pulled into the fire station to turn around and were followed by an opp cruiser with lights flashing.
When I asked the cop why he stopped us, he said it was because the car was old and the occupants were young and lots of young people drive around in old cars that may have safety violations.
I thanked him for the compliment (I am 50) and said that we would like to continue our journey unless he had charges to lay. He seemed a little disconcerted by my authoritarian manner and soon let us leave. My daughter felt rather intimidated.
Later, in conversation with another uncle (brother to the other two), he told me that this Giek was famous for harassing people and had stopped both himself and his son on more than one occasion in regards to impaired or possibly impaired driving.
So that was Giek. I mean how can you forget a cop named Giek? So, in reading about police harassment in the Ottawa area, it came as no surprise to see Giek's name come up. See the names page.
