RCMP Release Name Of Dead Man In Stolen Vehicle

Police Pursued Alberta Man For 90 Minutes In High Speed Chase

Wynyard, Sask., 9:37 a.m. CST May 29, 2001 --A car thief who shot himself after a high-speed chase involving gun fire with police in Saskatchewan has been identified as Allen Patrick Bauder.

The 20-year-old man was from Redwater, Alberta, just north of Edmonton.

RCMP in central Saskatchewan pursued Bauder for 90 minutes and reached speeds of up to 140 kilometres an hour.

At least nine shots were fired at police who said they returned fire only once.

Officers approached after the car became stuck in a field near Wynyard, 170 kilometres north of Regina.

They found Bauder dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

RCMP say the man was armed with two stolen rifles, a shotgun and a handgun.

The chase began Friday afternoon after a suspect in a gas theft from a service station near Raymore, Saskatchewan, 100 kilometres north of Regina, refused to stop for police.

Bauder's death is the third after encounters with police in the last month.

Police shot Saskatoon businessman Keldon McMillan after he allegedly shot and killed a police dog before turning his gun toward officers.

Melvin Bigsky was shot in late April after he was said to have rammed a police car with his truck and physically assaulted an officer outside Saskatoon.

WYNYARD - Police now say a man who died after a high speed chase Friday near Wynyard shot himself.

"It appears the lone male occupant of the vehicle died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound." said RCMP Sgt. Ron Toogood.

RCMP were pursuing a man in a stolen car with several weapons who had left a gas pump in the town of Raymore without paying.

Sgt. Ron Toogood with the RCMP says that during a ninety minute chase police vehicles were shot at several times.

"Approximately one hour into the chase there was an exchange of gunfire. At least one shot was fired by an RCMP member. The suspect vehicle became stuck in a field and from investigation to date it appears the lone male occupant of the vehicle died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

The man's name has not been released.

The Regina major crimes unit is investigating the incident.
