Full Name: John Paul Densmore
Born: December 1, 1944 (Santa Monica, California)
Primary Role(s): Percussionist/Drummer
John Densmore has often been stereotyped as the "goody-two shoes" of
The Doors. Most of this reputation is a result of Oliver Stone's
movie. Densmore is portrayed as the band member who was most disturbed
by Jim's excessive behavior. He used his drumming talent to accent
what each of the other band members were playing. The most notable
example I can give right now is the solo of "Light My Fire" available
on the bootleg "Lucifer Rising" which was recorded in Stockholm,
Sweden. Krieger and Densmore had a conversation with their instruments
during this particular solo. Krieger would muffle the strings on his
guitar to simulate percussion, then Densmore would play the exact same
rhythm on the drums. It made for a delightful twist to "Light My
Fire", which The Doors have said was never played exactly the same two
times.
