Genealogy of the Martin surname in Ireland, London and Sheffield

I have limited information on my own name, but a summary is as follows.

My G G Grandfather was John Martin who was born in about 1821 in the RC Parish Division of Caulry (Civil Parish of Ballyloughloe now named Mount Temple), 4 miles east of Athlone Westmeath Ireland. In 1835 at the age of 14  he joined the 97th Regiment of Foot (The Earl of Ulsters) in Portsmouth. His Regimental number was 829 and he retired in 1861 as a Corporal to settle in London. He spent 18 years overseas with the Regiment and was awarded the DCM in the Crimean War. His DCM and Crimean War Medals were sold at a Sotherby’s auction in May 2000 to an unknown buyer. He is also on the medal roll for the India Mutiny Medal (Lucknow) but the whereabouts of the medal is also unknown.

At some time John married Ellen McCave, (possibly McCabe), but there is no record of a marriage during the periods that the Regiment was in England, so if they married it may have been in Ireland or elsewhere overseas. John Martin died in 1870 at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington London. His death certificate did not give any family information but it mentions an Alfred Smith as present. Also the hospital records do not give any family information.

It is possible that John’s parents were Peter Martin = Mary Ganly whose other children were Mary, Catherine, Eleanor and Rose. The Martin children were baptised in the same parish.

My Great Grandfather William was born in 1863 London, and is in the 1881 Sheffield census. To date I have not found any other family for this period. William became a champion short distance runner, winning the Sheffield Handicaps in 1883 and 1884.

In 1884 he married Emily Norton and their 3 children were: Laura 1890, Violet 1895 and my Grandmother Emily Annie in 1885 (who married William Wragg in Sheffield see separate page).

My Grandmother left Sheffield with her sons to settle in Guildford SRY with Walter Dewey who was a Fishmonger and they owned a Fish shop there on Woodbridge Hill. My Grandmothers sons were Clifford, William and my father Leslie, all born in Sheffield.

There are some links to John Martin but not resolved, with the names Alexander Lyon from Scotland and his second wife Winifred Martin, maiden name Sinnett who was born in Ireland and married a James Martin who may be a brother/cousin of John. Also links to Glasgow and Liverpool which is maybe where the Martin family settled from Ireland.

Other surnames linked to the family are:

Norton of Sheffield, Norfolk and Suffolk back to 1720

Jolliffe  of Somerset/Wiltshire and Dorset back to 1712

Baker of Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire

Peckett Sheffield and Scarborough

Wragg, see separate page
