Sarawak.
Before Sarawak issue its own stamp on 1869, all correspondence addressed to Singapore and places beyond Singapore, was franked with East Indian Stamps & later the Straits Settlements stamps.
After Sarawak Issue its very own stamp. The stamp had local franking power only within the country and as far as Singapore. For destinations beyond that, Straits Settlements stamps had to be used in additions due to Sarawak was not a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
On 1st July 1897, Sarawak admitted as a member of UPU. An important milestone for the history of the Sarawak Post Office, where 1897 onward, Sarawak stamps able carried letters to oversea destinations.
As member of UPU. It's regulations required its members to introduce a postcard system. Sarawak issue its first postcard on 27th July 1897.
As we know that earlier correspondence, presumed that a stock of this East Indian Stamps & later the Straits Settlements stamps was kept at Kuching. But what about Postal Stationary Post Card (PSPC)? Was the PSPC also available as stamps? was this PSPC kept at Kuching?
Below a sample of 1893 Straits Settlements PSPC with portrait of Queen Victoria, 3c carmine. Used in Sarawak and addressed to Holland. Showing a fine "SARAWAK 12 NOV 95" single ring cds. stamp imprint and cancelled by "SINGAPORE NO 14 95" single ring cds with LEIDEN arrival cds at left.
