This cd is a collection of songs written by various artists, including four written by Rod himself, all of which are done in that inimitable west coast style of blues.
Although, Rod is undoubtedly the 'main man' in this band he isn't afraid of letting others take the lead. This is something probably best demonstrated on the traditional classic, 'Can't Get The Stuff No More', on which everyone takes a turn in the spotlight.
As with many other blues cd's this one is a mixture of fast, medium and slow material which combine to hold the listener's interest. However, having said that, it is the slow stuff that does it for me.
'California Blues' is a great example of this. This song has everything, great piano and vocals leading into laid back guitar and harmonica breaks which fit perfectly into the mood of the song.
'Worried Life Blues' and '4811 Wadsworth', are also personal favourites. The latter of these is a self penned instrumental showing that Rod can clearly cut it with the best when it comes to slow, droning harmonica.
Despite being drawn to the slower songs, to be honest, I like all of the material on this cd. My only criticism is that the sleeve notes are non-existent which is a bit of a disappointment. However that doesn't extract from Rod's music and the fact that he is a brilliant exponent of west coast blues.
I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this cd to anyone and if you get the chance to see him live but can't afford the tickets - sell your grandmother, he's brilliant and he's worth it!
