Recorded in 1981, this cd is one of my acoustic blues favourites covering songs by John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters & Jimmy Reed in addition to those written by Buddy Guy & Jnr Wells.
The first track pretty much sets the scene for the rest of the cd - nothing fancy, just solid in all areas. This restrained approach makes a refreshing change to the virtuoso approach of many modern blues players and is something that makes this cd all the more appealing.
Lead vocals are shared fairly evenly throughout the cd. This sharing approach is most noticeable on tracks 8 and 15 where both men seem to play off each other, singing alternate verses to great effect. It is through these two tracks that we are given the impression that the whole cd is made up of songs performed by two friends busking together in front of a microphone and having a good time doing so.
It's probably because of this that these are two of my favourite tracks. A point worth listening out for is on 'Baby What You Want Me To Do/That's Allright' where Buddy Guy seems to be winding it up only to be stopped by Jnr Wells starting another verse.
Other favourites include 'My Home Is In The Delta' by Muddy Waters and John Lee Hookers 'Boogie Chillen' which has Buddy Guy playing brilliantly 'alone and acoustic'.
This doesn't detract from the cd as a whole. After all, copying stuff isn't new in blues, in fact, it's sewn up in the history of this type of music.
