Calico Canyon is located in the beautiful Red Rock Country of the Southwestern United States. Normally a peaceful place, the canyon is bustling with activity as Calico, her clan sisters and hundreds of thousands of women around the world prepare for battle.
The enemy -- marauding bands of errant cells, wreaking havoc in the bodies of women from their twenties to their nineties . . . a disease that has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. today.
This enemy takes one of every eight of our warriors. Many fight valiantly and survive. Many fight until their last breath. The warriors who have been taken hostage by the enemy are fearsome fighters but they need our help. We honor many in this battle, such as the valiant hero, Dennis Slamon, who fought insurance companies and the FDA for 11 long years for release of the powerful weapon, Herceptin. Today this weapon enables wounded warriors to live as long as 6 or 7 years after metastasis . . . and yet the release of his discovery was thwarted heartlessly at every turn. For many, the gift of Herceptin has bought time . . . We must find a cure before that time runs out.
We must not let passivity or passing the buck allow the fight against breast cancer and all cancers to fall back. We have a world of brilliant minds at our disposal. We have millions of dollars being spent on things less precious than life. We have excellent research facilities and we have the best scientists and doctors. Why are they not being backed in their fight to find a cure? How many more have to die before the powers that be wake up and release their forces?
It's time the warriors leave the canyon, leave their homes, leave their cities and gather together to fight Breast Cancer ourselves. We will have to take on this enemy. We will have to fight this battle ourselves. There is much we can do. We do not have to sit and wait for someone else to take up the banner. We can do it ourselves, Warriors. Quietly we will get up and walk a path that will lead to victory. Let's go, warriors. We are needed. It is time to stand up and be counted.
