When a UTU member tells you that if the BLET represents all crafts on the NS they will eliminate your job, ask him where the through freight brakemen and flagmen went. Ask him why the UTU contract allows for the carrier to permanently dismiss a conductor who fails to qualify under the locomotive engineer training program. The answer is inadequate representation for its membership. Guess what? The BLET, who the UTU claims is going to eliminate your job, will provide our conductors and brakemen with real job protection. In the event you do not qualify as a locomotive engineer, you will still be able to keep your job as a conductor or brakemen. Again, we have this benefit in hand. We realize that some employees are just not cut out to be engineers, while at the same time, they are well qualified for ground service. This is what representation is all about.
Reason number 4 why the BLET on Norfolk Southern is going to pursue a Representation Election is so that our conductors and brakemen will not lose their jobs due to an inferior UTU agreement which allows their dismissal from the railroad for failing to qualify as an engineer .
