He Dreams
Donnie dreams and
when he dreams he dreams of Frank. Which means that dreams aren't that
different than being awake, really. Frank is always there. Frank knows how much
Donnie doesn't want to be alone, so he will never leave him. Frank woke him so
that he wouldn't have to die alone.
In Donnie's dreams, though, Frank is different, because in dreams Donnie can
control him, or at least, he isn't controlled by Frank, like he is in reality.
Like he tells himself he is. In Donnie's dreams, Frank will take off the rabbit
face he wears to reveal what is underneath. The pale, blank slate of a face,
the ruined eye, the mouth downturned and twisted with something like sorrow. Or
regret, if thats something that bunny rabbits can feel. If Frank is a bunny
rabbit at all.
If it matters.
Donnie doesn't think it does, when he does think about it. In his dreams,
Donnie doesn't think at all. He just takes Frank's blank slate of a face in his
hands and presses it to his. Closes his eyes and kisses that regretful mouth
and doesn't think about the fact that he can taste blood.
He doesn't think at all. He just kisses Frank and whispers in his mind,
"I'm so sorry," pressing his fingers to the space where there was
once a seeing eye.
