CHOCOLATE AND SANDALWOOD
Lavender Brown and
Hermione Granger
decay; plaster; sandalwood
When Hermione was seven, her uncle gave her a sandalwood box filled with
chocolates. "Hide it from your parents," he said with a wink and a
smile, and she did. The chocolates disappeared quickly, as they would in the
possession of any sugar-deprived child, but she kept the box, storing in it
first her jewelry and now her magical amulets. But her first association with
the smell of sandalwood was chocolate, and so she associates the scent with
things that taste good.
Lavender smells like sandalwood, she notices one day while passing her in the
hallways.
Its strange. Girls like Lavender don't smell like sandalwood. They smell like
disgusting Muggle makeup and stifling perfume and bubble gum. They don't smell
like sandalwood boxes and things that taste good.
Lavender does, though. Lavender smells like sandalwood and her eyes are the
color of chocolate, and Hermione is starting to wonder what she tastes like.
(Okay, I didn't get the other two words in there. But this way its semi-happy,
and no fic with the word 'decay' can be happy.)
