Shinnok
Shinnok was an elder god. He had two sons, Raiden and Shao Kahn. Custom dictated that only one of his sons could become an elder god too. He decided that in order to choose which son should become an elder god, he would pit them in a contest to see who was stronger. He ordered them to fight to the death. Raiden defeated Shao Kahn, but in an act that disgusted his father he wouldn’t kill Shao Kahn. Since Raiden wouldn’t kill Shao Kahn and Shao Kahn couldn’t beat Raiden, he wouldn’t let either become an elder god and he banished Shao Kahn. For reasons unknown Shinnok himself was banished and his status as elder god was revoked. Some time later he discovered an amulet that allowed him to return. He overthrew his son, Shao Kahn, as ruler of Outworld and attempted to conquer what his son couldn’t. Before he could accomplish his goal his sorcerer betrayed him and had his amulet. Quan Chi used his amulet to kill him.
