Shang Tsung
Shang Tsung was a shaolin monk who had extraordinary powers in the black arts. Shang Tsung was considered evil and was always ridiculed by the other shaolin monks. One day he was fighting in the Mortal Kombat tournament when he cheated by using black magic. The ruler of the world he was fighting against was Shao Kahn and he sentenced Shang Tsung to work in the mines of Outworld. Shao Kahn really intended to bring Shang Tsung over to his side because he saw great power in Shang Tsung. Shao Kahn offered Shang Tsung more power than he could ever dream of and his freedom from the mines, if Shang Tsung agreed to help him. Seeing as how he had nothing left to lose, Shang Tsung agreed. Shao Kahn quickly learned Shang Tsung was the most powerful sorcerer in the art of the soul he had ever seen. He taught Shang Tsung how to harvest his opponent’s soul to make him stronger. The elder gods had created the Mortal Kombat to keep anyone from crossing through the different dimensions until they won ten Mortal Kombats in row, which were held once a generation. Shang Tsung was ordered by Shao Kahn to win Mortal Kombat and he won nine Mortal Kombats each time stealing his opponents souls and becoming more powerful with a each victory.
Shang Tsung was then defeated by Kung Lao, a shaolin monk. Shao Kahn punished Shang Tsung severely. Shang Tsung then enlisted the help of Goro, the Shaokin Prince. Goro easily defeated Kung Lao and Shang Tsung then killed Kung Lao and took his soul. Then Shang Tsung killed everyone it Kung Lao’s family. Shang Tsung had to start over with the Mortal Kombat tournaments, and as part of his punishment, Shao Kahn had denied him agelessness. Which meant that Shang Tsang would die without the souls from others. Shang Tsung wasn’t worried though, because this time he had goro to win the tournaments for him. Goro went for many tournaments winning them all and Shao Kahn was once again on the verge of overtaking Earthrealm when Goro was defeated by Liu Kang. Liu Kang then proceeded to defeat Shang Tsung.
Shao Kahn was furious with Shang Tsung. Shao Kahn almost killed Shang Tsung, but he decided he might need Shang Tsung one day. So instead of killing him Shao Kahn banished Shang Tsung somewhere, probably the Netherrealm. Shao Kahn found a way to invade Earthrealm without winning Mortal Kombat, but his invasion failed and he was severely weakened. Shao Kahn unbanished Shang Tsung and replenished his youth. While Shao Kahn was weakened the sorcerer Quan Chi came up with a plan to unleash the fallen elder god, Shinnok, and Shinnok came to power. He was defeated and Quan Chi was banished to the Netherrealm by Scorpion. Shao Kahn’s reign was restored.
Quan Chi was tormented horrible by Scorpion and his fellow demons, so Quan Chi used an amulet he stole from Shinnok to escape the Netherrealm. Quan Chi stumbled upon the mythical Dragon King’s unbeatable army. He realizes he needs Shung Tsung’s soul stealing powers to revitalize the army, so he and Shang Tsung form the deadly alliance. They know there are two people who have the power to stop them, so their first step is to eliminate them. They go to Shao Kahn’s palace and kill him. Then they go to a Shaolin temple where Liu Kang is training and Shang Tsung breaks his neck after Quan Chi hits him.
