Another of my favourite animals is the Red Neck Pademelon, these cute little fellows are one of the smaller wallabies in my area. 'Spencer' came to me after a driver discovered him still in his dead mothers pouch on the side of the road. She tried to raise him herself, but sadly did not have the knowledge needed to do it successfully. When I first got 'Spencer' he was so sick that I didn't know if I would be able to keep him alive. With a lot of hard work, patience and the support of my local vet we were able to restore his health and I'm happy to say that 'Spencer' is now 'free as a bird'.
This is the last photo that I took of 'Spencer'. It shows him on the day that he was released into his proper habitat - rainforest. As you can see he certainly looks happy and well fed. Sorry 'Spencer', no more coke for you!
Sugar Gliders are also wonderful to raise, they require a lot of time and patience as their attention span is about the same as the average three year old. Yet they have the most inquisitive and loving natures. While in some countries it is legal to keep them as pets it is not permited here in Australia. Therefore I try not to become too attatched to my small charges making release a less painfull experience for both myself and them. This baby Sugar Glider was named 'Mr Bean' due to his small size (5 grams). He has now been released.
Meet 'Austin', he's a baby Brushtail Possum who had the misfortune of losing his Mum when she was chased by dogs. He was also a little 'trouble maker', but I was still sorry to see him go.
Delilah is a Ringtail Possum which are common in my area. Delilah's Mum was hit by a car and left on the side of the road with spinal injuries. The mothers injuries were so severe that I was left with no other option but to euthanase her. I am however happy to report that Delilah now has been released and is well on her way to having babies of her own.
