For many years the bards have sun of this
Greatest of warriors, mightiest king.
Among heroes of legend, one place his.
In halls throughout the land does his name ring.
The tales they tell, of great works and battles,
Truly bespeak almost a demi-god.
But in poets' rhymes and minstrels' prattles
Is lost the man whose feet tread sod.
Not unlike other men; nothing magic;
With faults, failures, virtues and successes;
With a fine lady bless'd; sometimes tragic;
Always tries his best; prone to excesses.
Let it content us to leave him a man;
Without magic, his deeds seem greater then.
