This Ruby is
identified by its red head. The body will be dark blue fading
into black at the tail, there may also be a red sheen. It will
have large scales and large eyes. Their body type will exactly
match that of the Rosy Barb, sometimes they are confused as
the same thing.
These are schooling fish known for their speed and fin-nipping
habits. Groups of 5 or more are recommended with tankmates being
other Barbs or other fast moving fish. As with most Barbs, a
planted tank is best. Light levels should be lower than usual.
Don't frighten these fish and attempt to keep stress at a minimum.
They are hardy fish but do need clean water, provide strong filtration
and bi-weekly water changes.
It is difficult to sex these fish unless they are full grown.
Once full grown the males will usually be brighter and larger.
Spawning can occur in home aquariums. Plants should be provided
to house the eggs. Once laid, expect around 50-100 eggs. Fry
will hatch in 1-2 days. They will become free swimming in around
5 days. |
