The Silver Arowana
is a unique and attractive fish. The body is very long and
thin with very long based flowing fins. The head is large and
the mouth is very big. The scales will be large and very evident.
The base color, of course, is silver. Some pinks may appear
in the fins. The caudal fin is small.
With a mouth as large as theirs, Arowanas will eat many fish.
Any fish smaller that is thinner than the head is at risk. They
don't move very quickly but due to their length they'll need
plenty of room to turn around. Provide a very large aquarium
with good depth. Plants should be scarce, but available for hiding.
Keep all decorations towards the edges of the aquarium. These
fish will need all the swimming space they can get. As with all
Arowanas it is wise to make sure the tank is covered at all times.
These fish can leap right out if the opportunity presents itself.
Keep in mind that these fish are strong, use quality equipment
that is resistant to breakage. The water should be slightly acidic
and have good filtration. Water changes are recommended every
two weeks. Keep them with fish that are larger than their heads.
Breeding is possible but difficult. When successful breeding
has occurred a female will lay her eggs and the male will take
them into his mouth. So, they are mouthbrooders. It takes quite
some time for the fry to be free swimming, about 2 months.
Sexing is only possible during breeding. The female will lay
eggs, the male will incubate them. |
