This is a slow
growing species. It will grow even slower than the "Silver" variety.
Tank size is essential for this species to grow and to be healthy.
If you want it to be healthy put it in a 125 gallon aquarium.
You should provide a soft (sandy) substrate and a lot of surface
swimming space. They need it! This fish will spend most of it's
time at the surface. Provide lots of wood and plants in the habitat.
Feed these fish flake foods or other small foods while they
are little. As they grow switch to pellets and other larger
foods. Some individuals will only accept live foods. For juveniles
feed small crickets and mealworms. Obviously as they grow they'll
need larger prey. Feeder fish are often used as they get much
larger.
Water conditions are important. Provide a warm temperature
with little to no water agitation. You'll need strong filtration
and bi-weekly water changes are drastically important.
Males are the incubators of this fish type. They are mouthbrooders
and will raise their young in their mouths. Fry will emerge
at about 3" long.
You can sex Arowanas by the size of their mouths. Males will
have larger mouths to accommodate their young. |
