One of the most
interesting species the author has come in contact with, these
fish rival anything seen on the Discovery channel. However,
they are usually not compatible with most aquarists' environments.
This is a brackish water fish and should not be kept in freshwater.
Over their lifespan these fish will move from Saltwater to
Freshwater and ultimately find a Brackish medium.
Be careful with this breed, they can be aggressive. When keeping
them make sure you have multiple specimens and always match size
as closely as possible.
These fish spend much of their time towards the surface of
the aquarium due to their most entertaining feature. These
are the infamous "spitting" fish, thus the name "Archer"fish.
These fish can literally spit water several feet with extreme
accuracy. In the wild they often shoot down their prey (usually
insects) from above, once the prey hits the water the Archerfish
swims over and gobbles them up. These fish are definite Carnivores
and must be fed accordingly. Insects are usually a good option.
Live are best. Always feed foods that stay on the surface,
they will not swim down to get it.
Sexing is unknown.
Breeding is possible but will only happen in Saltwater. |
