Detailed Description:

This fish is the KING of Characins...it is by far the largest. This is a big, powerful, and well protected Tetra!
Because of it's size and look as well as it's open habitats this fish is more of a gamefish than pet worthy. It is not recommended for any aquarist other than the experienced (and well funded).

This large fish also has large scales for a Tetra. It also has a big mouth which makes for big food. Be careful when handling because it has spines at the tip of all of it's fins. Even this fish's teeth are impressive...large, sharp and readily seen even when it's mouth is closed.

This fish is usually silver or gray with black "tiger" stripes running down it's sides. It is not odd however to see specimens with a orange, blue, green, or yellow tint.

Be extremely careful when cleaning or maintaining their aquarium habit (if you dare to own one). These fish have sharp teeth and are extremely efficient predators. Do NOT attempt to handle them. Their manerisms are similar to those of the Piranhas. They destroy whatever they attack and a very persistant. They are quite capable of eating prey as big as or bigger than they are because of their group hunting techniques. They should be kept in groups with all specimens being similar in size. When feeding you should offer large LIVE prey...nothing else will suffice.

If keeping this species you should provide a strong (constant) current and lots of air.

Breeding behavior is unknown.

DO NOT attempt to keep this species unless you are experienced.
