Streets Of London. A side of "Streets of London" 7", identical to
We Are The League version. Taken from CD/original tape.
So What. B side of "Streets Of London" 7", identical to version
on CD reissues of We Are The League. Taken from vinyl.
I Hate People. A side of "I Hate People" 7". Louder guitar mix,
no feedback compared to We Are The League version. Taken from vinyl.
Let's Break The Law. B side of "I Hate People" 7". Different intro,
with glass breaking, sound of someone running, and police siren. Also different
guitar compared to We Are The League version. Taken from vinyl.
Woman. A side of "Woman" 7". Different lyrics in second half of
song compared to We Are The League version. Taken from vinyl.
Rocker. B side of "Woman" 7". Identical to version on CD reissues
of We Are The League - though not remastered. Taken from vinyl.
World War III. Flexi on "Flexipop" magazine. Live cut, good quality,
good performance though on the first chorus the guitar's off key...Taken
from flexi (and a fairly crackly copy...)
For You. A side of "For You" 7". Better quality than tracks 2-7,
probably taken from CD/original master. The same version as usual.
Ballad of JJ Decay. B side of "For You" 7". Departure from the usual
League material, and not one of their finer moments. This was obviously
meant to be a stab at making commercial rock...which they did far better
on "The Perfect Crime". As with For You, excellent quality.
Out On The Wasteland. A side of "Out On The Wasteland" 7"/12". Far
better stab at making more commercial rock, this is a crossover between
We Are The League and The Perfect Crime; musically still the standard guitar/bass/drums
combination, but rock style/lyrics. Again, excellent quality (though mastered
at a low-ish level...)
We Will Survive. B side of "Out On The Wasteland" 7"/12". More punky
than "Wasteland" or "Queen+Country", this has got a great guitar section
and is more like the '82 vintage League. Excellent quality, if a bit quiet.
Queen and Country. B side of "Out On The Wasteland" 12". Ho-hum.
Probably the worst song on the album, this is a slow-ish anti-war number
that is generic, dull 80s rock. Sorry, but you can see why this was only
included on the 12" version of the single. Quality same as "Wasteland"/"We
Will Survive"
So What. A side of "Fuck Around The Clock" 12". Storming live cut
taken from the '89 farewell gig in Tunbridge Wells and not included on
the "Live and Loud" LP recording of that gig. Personally the guitars are
a bit low in the mix and there's virtually no audience noise, but still
great track. Excellent quality.
I Hate People. A side of "Fuck Around The Clock" 12". Weird live
cut from same '89 gig as above. It starts off slowly and only really gets
going up to full speed towards the end. To my ears this sounds slightly
"duller" than So What, but that could just be me - it's still excellent
quality. This track was included on the "Live and Loud" LP.
Snowman. B side of "Fuck Around The Clock" 12". Good fast perfomance
of Snowman, though again a bit "duller" than So What. Included on "Live
and Loud" LP. Again, excellent quality.
Fuck Around The Clock. B side of "Fuck Around The Clock" 12". Great
way to end the album, bit of chat before and after song, strong performance
with same quality as "So What", not on "Live and Loud". The last ever song
the League played before reforming in '92.
Basically, this is a very good buy. It's the only time most of
the early singles have been put on CD, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper
- and easier - than getting copies of the old 7". And you get 3 sides of
detailed sleevenotes by punk reissue expert Mark Brennan. What more can
I say...
