The following is a list of tips and tricks that I find helpful in my daily life. Fibromyalgia, CMPS, IBS, Headaches/Migraines ect...
For painful muscles use a rice sac. You can use fabric or even an old pillowcase and make two squares. Place the pattern or best view of the fabric on the inside. Sew the squares on all four sides. Leave about two inches from one corner unsewn. Then turn the square inside out, fill inside with rice and sew the opening up. This can be used for painful muscles, headaches, toothaches and just about any pain. You may heat it in the microwave or freeze it. I use mine just about every day. I have some that are rectangle shaped, some square and some round.
Buy a mop that has a removable end. You can buy all kinds of dusters and cleaning helpers to switch to for varied task. You can use a sponge mop adapter to clean shower walls and a brush adapter to clean the tub. Sponge mop is great to wash windows with too.
Consider a "Reacher or Grabber". It's a long stick that you can grab things that are out of reach with.
Use a stool when doing dishes or cooking. At times when your legs are hurting it helps to use a stool when doing task that require a lot of standing. I keep one handy, with four children I use it often!
Go outside just to observe everyday. It helps to be in the sunlight and hear the birds chirping sometimes.
When going to the grocery store, go in the early morning on your best days. This is the best time to get good parking spots and usually the stores are pretty empty. If you have a 24 hour store near you, going between 4 AM and 8 AM works best in my area. When you get to the store, do not hesitate to use a scooter. I know it makes me feel silly and weird too, but you will feel better when you get home! Ask for help with items that are too far up, reaching and lifting are definite no-no's. When I know I shouldn't I ask people to lift the heavy things and reach for me. Better to ask than to suffer the next day for being shy!
Always get the neccities at the grocery store. I always get extra milk, cheese, eggs, cola, koolaid, water, snacks for the kids, fresh fruits and veggies, bread, lunch meat, light bulbs, cereal and whatever you use on a daily basis.
Stock up on the foods that you can serve with little effort. These should be used only when you cannot cook. These would include Frozen Entrees like Salisbury Steak, Lasagna. Canned foods like Raviolis, Spaghetti sauce. Dry goods like Ramón Noodles Rice and Pasta.
Cook double when you can. If you have a good day cook twice as much as your family can eat. Freeze the other half for days when you cannot dedicate the day to cooking. This works for one pot dishes like stews really well.
An electric Heating blanket is a wise investment! I use mine in all months to help ease sore muscles.
Do two task at once... yes that's right two... When you do two things, one that requires sitting and one that requires standing you can alternate between the two!
Change your clothes every day, even if you stay in bed! This will make you feel better, because after all... You Did Something!
Invest time in typing courses on line. Many are free. This helps tremendously and cuts your computer time in half!
We should get up and go to bed at the same time everyday. I still take naps, so this is easier for me to accomplish.
Invest in a Bubble Spa for the bath. I have one and it does wonders for tired sore muscles! A hot bath can do wonders for Fibromites!
Essential oils that relax... There are several ones that help to relax the body and mind, these are very helpful.
Limit your vacuuming time and any repetitive activity.
With Fibromyalgia a new lifestyle has to be invented for each person. I find that if I closely listen to my body, I will know when to stop. Whatever you think you can do today, do half and you might just feel better tomorrow. Most people with Fibro are over achievers and do more than they should. You have to learn the hard way in most cases to STOP, Listen and Act on your body signals. When you find yourself sighing, it's usually time to stop! Learn and practice saying NO. I don't like to do it either, but you have to say the dreaded words... "I'm sorry but I cannot do that for you today" "I'm sorry but I am just not feeling well today" and yes even "NO, I CANNOT"
Use a seam ripper to open chips and bags, this will help to avoid ripping the bag and makes closing it easier because its a clean cut.
Get a good mattress! You will reap the benefits immediately! Also use ear plugs when you sleep. This will help you to not wake as often. Use pillows to prop yourself up when your hurting. I have one of those body pillows, I use mine especially for leg pain. If used between your legs it will line up your hips up to help avoid sciatic nerve pain.
Reduce the stress in your life. My mother use to say the dishes can wait but the kids will not... She was right! Fibro mites need to adopt a system of relaxation all through the day. When you begin to feel stressed... lay down, sit down... whatever you can do and just relax!
Telephone headsets are wonderful! It prevents you from neck pain caused by holding the phone with your neck!
Research as much as possible. Medications, Illness everything about your condition, you need to know! This will help you deal with your illness. When friends and family ask questions have it ready in black and white, that's what I do.
Find a way to exercise, yes I know this hurts. Even if you just walk 10 minutes a day, three days a week it counts! All fibromites need a little gentle stretching everyday. Make it a habit to stretch your neck from side to side. Try almost straightening your legs when you sit. Make your arms go out to form a body cross....If we do not use our muscles they will not work as well when we need them.
For everyday things you use, keep them at waist level. No need to put the hairspray on the top shelf, right? Put the dishes you use most in the easiest area to get to in your cabinets. Make it a point to organize things better, so that what you need more will be right there. It takes time, but soon you will have less arm and calf pain from all the reaching and tip toeing!
