VICKY LEANDROS… Her Life

Vicky Leandros - a biography 1

August 23rd 1952: Vicky is born on the Greek island of Korfu in Paleokastritsa; she was given the name Vassiliki Papathanassiou.

More than 30 years on stage, over 40 million copies sold all over the world, a number of golden- and platinum -records and as ever does she belong to the very top of the European Music scene: Vicky Leandros.
Dreams have got wings. This is the creed that producer Jack White linked to the latest album of Vicky Leandros. With the songs on the new CD "Träumen mit Vicky", one can -in the truest sense of the word- leap into a wonderful mood, in fantastic melodies with rich poetry. Like falling into a bed of roses. Vicky Leandros lives like it. The artist has, both professional and in private, fulfilled her dreams. Like no-one else in German show business she is on her way to the top, despite of a "break for the children" with help from Jack White she has had a sensational comeback. However, her artistic flight has never swept her of her feet. The born Greek can enjoy her success with all her heart, seeing that her life-long dream has been fulfilled. An emotional wealth, that Vicky Leandros passes on to her fans on "Best of…". A true crown of her success.

"Träumen mit Vicky" is a selected compilation of then sensitive, then reflective, then passionate but also humorous hits of this artist, arranged in a modern way. As the top in this collection of course the successful, and previously released, single of the Titanic-melody "My heart will go on" of Celine Dion - released by Vicky as the technical strong and emotional
"Weil mein Herz dich nie mehr vergißt". Of course the love statement "Du bist mein schönster Gedanke" could not be left out as well as the, sung with Tony Christie, duet "We're Gonna Stay Together" or the classical "Theo, wir fahr'n nach Lodz" in a new setting. and the moody "Günter gestehe". The album is proof of Vicky's diversity and it contains the very best of her songs until now. Over 25 years on stage. Over 40 million albums sold all over the world (of which many in other languages), various gold and platinum records and countless trophies from all over the world, still sold-out tours. That is her status quo so far and also it is the reason why she still belongs to the top of the European music industry. The Greek singer, born on the Greek isle of Korfu, is a popularity phenomenon. Her voice, her charisma and her - through the years almost unchanged- musical vision are unique in the world of music. The balance of success of this artist, who as one of the very few artists for who English is not their native language still got listed in the Guinness encyclopedia of popular music in a chapter of her own, is rich of highlights.

In 1965 her first record "Messer, Gabel, Schere, Licht", in 1967 "L'amour est blue", her international breakthrough at "Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson" for Luxembourg. ("L'amour est blue" is sung in seven languages, the best selling Eurovision song of all times. It reaches platinum status) In 1971 her first own TV-show "Ich bin" for the German television
which has won among other awards the "Bronze Rose of Montreux". In 1972 she came first in "Grand Prix" with the song "Après toi". (Six million copies were sold and the English version "Come What May" made it to no. 1 in the UK charts.) After that countless hits like "Ich hab' die Liebe geseh'n", "Die Bouzouki klang" and "Ich liebe das Leben" - the millions of sales acknowledge her status of "top star".

In 1972, Vicky was listed 'best-selling artist' in the annual "Billboard-balance". "Après toi" is the best selling record in the world that year. From 1972 until 1978 she had multiple personality shows on the German television. Also she has concerts in "Olympia" in Paris, even in the "Royal Albert Hall" and the "Royal Festival Hall" besides an own show at the BBC.
Vicky Leandros performs all over the world in sold out concert halls and big show arenas like the stadium in Athens, where she performed for a crowd of 52.000. Greece celebrates its musical ambassador. Besides a large number of albums she records for other countries (31 in Japan, 20 in Canada, 63 in Greece, 46 in the Benelux, 18 in France, 18 in England, 30 in South Africa of which many made it to gold and platinum status) she also delivers some extraordinary productions like the "United Nations"-benefit albums in London, on which she performs with Johnny Halliday, Demis Roussos or with US star Davis Soul.

After a self-imposed break of a few years in which she focuses on her three children, she had a successful comeback with Jack White. She sells over 100.00 copies of her first co-production  "Du bist mein schönster Gedanke" she made with the Berlin hit maker. After that the albums "Lieben und Leben", "Gefühle". "Weil mein Herz dich nie mehr vergißt". A comeback that even the very strict "Spiegel-TV" thinks to be dignified for this artist. By three sold out and praised tours in Germany the baroness (she has married the German Baron "Enno Freiherr von Ruffin"), who has been considered to be one of the best dressed ladies in the German 'society', a remarkable act on stage, an incomparable voice and last but not least a flawless figure.

All in all Vicky has released over 430 singles and over 400 long-play albums, about 40 million items (LP's, singles. MC's and so on . . .). The balance of a satisfied artist, that reflects itself on the latest album "Träumen mit Vicky" as a highlight and as a statement of her own philosophy. Vicky: "I have fulfilled a dream with my life".

Here are some milestones for Vicky:

August 23rd 1952: Vicky is born on the Greek island of Korfu in Paleokastritsa; she was given the name Vassiliki Papathanassiou.

1958: Vicky moves to Germany. Her father Leo Papathanassiou (Leo Leandros) and her mother
Kyriaki Protopapa already lived in Hamburg for some time.

1961: Her parents got divorced; Vicky stays in Hamburg with her father. Here she attends the Gymnasium (it can be compared with the secondary grammar-school) and after that she attends the 'Dolmetscher-schule'. All of her life she has taken classes in singing, guitar playing and ballet as a preparation for her career.

1965: As a teenager she makes her debut with the single Messer, Gabel, Schere, Licht and she also makes her first appearance on the German television. Together with her class from school she performs in a show and receives her first payment of 200 DM (about $120 today).

1967: In this year she makes her first major international appearance in Vienna. She represents Luxembourg at the Eurovision Songcontest and ends up a respectable fourth with the song L'amour est blue. The song will be translated into 5 languages and it will become one of the best-selling Eurovision songs ever. The song became quadruple platinum.

1968: Vicky gets the 'Golden Europe'. By now she is well known far across the borders of Germany where she made her first appearance. She sings successfully in German, Greek, French, English, Italian and in Japanese. Later she would add to this list Spanish and Dutch.

1971: Her television show Ich bin (I am) wins the Bronze Rose of Montreux and the RTL-Lion in Bronze. By now Vicky has become a young woman who performs by her full name of Vicky Leandros.

1972: This will be the most successful year for the young artist. April 3rd she makes her second appearance in the Eurovision Songcontest in Edinburgh. This time too she sings for Luxembourg. After a very exciting race with the British New Seekers (Beg, Steel or Borrow) she eventually wins with the song Après toi with 128 points The New Seekers end up second with 114 points. Translated into seven languages this song sells over 6 million copies. The English version Come What May reaches the top of the UK-charts. After that numerous hits follow like Ich hab' die Liebe gesehen, Die Bouzouki klang... and Ich liebe das Leben. The sales in Germany reach dazzling heights. Vicky promotes to World Star.
In the 'Billboard-balance' Vicky is mentioned as the 'best-selling artist'. Her Après toi is this years' best sold song worldwide.

1973: She starts her first German tour. Concerts follow in Paris in the "Olympia", in the "Royal Albert Hall", in the "Royal festival Hall". She even gets her own television show at the BBC. In the stadium of Thessaloniki she performs for over 60.000 cheering fans. Also in this year her second television show "Portrait Vicky Leandros" is broadcasted.

1974: The famous Theo, wir fahr'n nach Lodz becomes her third triumph in Germany. In the same year her third television show Mein Lied fur Dich is broadcasted.

1975: For Theo... she receives again the "Golden Europe" and some golden records. She crosses the Atlantic ocean and with her English album Across the Water she gets praising critics in America.

1976: She signs a million contract with CBS and because of her single Tango d' Amor she can always count on support in the US-charts. Nevertheless Vicky does not feel at home in America and turns her back on this potential market.

1977: She Made her first album for CBS V.L. Only Auf dem Mond da Blühen keine Rosen and Kali Nichta became big successes.

1978: She makes her fourth television show Vicky im Wunderland. Her new album Ich bin ein Mädchen quickly takes her back into the hearts of her fans. She also makes two albums with folk-songs as well as an album with Christmas carols.

1979: Vicky leaves CBS as they wouldn't publish her album Wie am allerersten Tag.

1980: Vicky marries the Greek Ivan Zissiadis and becomes a mother for the first time.  Her son Leandraki means the world to her. Finally she performed again in Kerkrade at the Schlager festival.  She makes a number of albums for foreign countries (31 in Japan, 20 in Canada, 63 in Greece, 46 in the Benelux, 18 in France, 30 in South Africa of which many have been awarded with gold and platinum).

1981: She makes a number of exceptional albums such as the "United-Nation" beneficiary-album Love is alive in London; for this album she cooperates with e.g. Johnny Hallyday, Demis Roussos and the US-superstar David Soul. She signs a new contract with Phonogram and releases the album Ich gehe neue Wege.
1982: She makes the single Verlorenes Paradies which becomes a great hit in both Germany and The Netherlands (Verloren zijn we niet).

1983: Her personal life is the reason for commotion. She divorces her husband. He abducts her son to Greece. What follows are many legal procedures to make sure she gets back the right to take care of her son and eventually her son himself. In the meantime, France has become Vicky's second musical home.

1984: The song A l'est d'Eden reaches the second place in the French charts.
1985: She has much success with her album Eine Nacht in Griechenland, which made gold in The Netherlands.

1986: Vicky remarries with Baron Enno von Ruffin and since then lives at Basthorst in Schleswig-Holstein with her husband, her son Leandraki and her daughters Milane and Sandra. Vicky focuses more on her personal life and does a very good job in shielding her children from all the public attention. In the years to come she performs on television only once in a while. It becomes a bit quiet again around Vicky.

1989: Fortunately for Greece she records the album Piretos tou Erota.
1993: She makes the album Andres. In Greece the people once again think of her as a star.
1995: After a self-imposed break of a few years she had a comeback with (until now) three albums and three sold-out tours in Germany.

1998: A comeback that even the very strict "Spiegel-TV" thinks to be dignified for this artist. In total she has now made and sold over 430 singles; inclusive of these singles she has now sold approximately 40 million items (LP's, singles. MC's and so on . . .). And that is not something that a lot of artists can say. Vicky is back in 1998, just like the old days. She sold over 100.000 copies of "Weil mein Herz Dich nie mehr vergißt". Now the doors are just like the 70's wide open for her; she left BMG / Jack White productions. She signs a contract by Warner Bros., to make more songs written by herself.

1999: Vicky at the studio's. Momentarily Vicky is to be found -almost daily- in the studio to record her new album, which should be released early 2000. The album will contain 15 songs, of which she wrote for 7 songs the lyrics herself, in cooperation with Lukas Hilbert. And, besides two covers and a re-make of an old Vicky-hit from the 70's, they are planning a duett with a very wellknown english singer. A part of this album will be produced by Vicky herself: "Together with a.o. Michael Hagen we have much in our own hands. Recently we recorded some songs with a big orchestra. Those are almost ready. Some of the other songs will be produced by internationally wellknown producers. "Beside our own production-team in Germany, we will record in Italy and in England with some producers. And, although it will take some extra time, I am very pleased to work with those producers as well."

Dream figure at age 46

Vicky, just how do you do it ? She is back - Germanies Pop Diva Vicky Leandros! Erotic and sexy like never before; at the age of 46 ! The mother of three children (Son Leo 18, Daughters Milana 14 and Sandra 12) still has a dream figure: Size 34, 51 kilo , (1,66 Meter).

How does she do it?
Vicky, the power woman. Today she starts a big tour "Vicky 99" in Berlin. Then is it for 24 Cities, six weeks criss cross through Germany, over 15 000 Kilometer ! To be able to do that, the singer needs to be in a great shape. After every two-hour concert I have lost 1,5 kilograms. "But after dinner everything is back on."

Vicky, sets an example in disciplin. In BILD she reveals her beauty and fitness program.
* 30 minutes of training on the fitness wheel every day.
* after this, 20 minutes of arm and shoulder training.
* at least three times a week, a ballet teacher comes to Basthorst to practice.
* every morning a cold shower, the face too.
* moisture lotion from top till toe.
* no matter how tired she is, every evening her neck and face are cleaned, moisture lotion applied. Almost every day a moisture lotion face mask and little make up (all from Chanel).

Vicky minds healthy food - a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, low fat meat. But she also likes to prepare Italian dishes for the whole family. She does not deprive herself: "two glasses of wine or champagne, wonderful!"

For 13 years now she has been married to the baron Enno Freiherr von Ruffin (47). Maybe it's because of the happy marriage that it seems as though time has gone by almost without leaving its traces. Vicky, still in love: "I am so happy that Enno stays with me through the whole tour, supports me and gives me strenght. In th eweekends he gets the children, whith whom we then enjoy our famili life. I simply need that!" She can spend each day with her family. She has more than enough money: "But singing is my passion. An empty life - not for me!"

Vicky - a satisfied woman?
Not entirely. "My hair." she sneers. "Humidity curls and tangles my hair. I always have to use
the hairdrier." Nanny Oehmichen 1999-12-15, Stockholm

Eurovision Song Contest 1967
When Luxemburg Had to choose its representative for the Eurovision Songcontest 1967, it was a unanimous: Vicky! A big promotion campaign follows and the press focusses on the young Greek singer. Accompanied by her father Leo Leandros and the production-manager of her recordcompany, travels Vicky on April 7th to Vienna. Rehearsals and a party organized by the record-company, had to convince the professional journals that "L'amour est bleu" had a fair chance to end on no.1.

On April 8th 'round 22.00 h. things are getting serious for the nervous Vicky. As soon as she ended singing her song, a deafening applause convinced her that she and she alone could be the winner. When the final results were announced, Vicky had to cope with a disappointment, because Sandie Shaw's Puppet on a string won with 47 points. After 15 minutes she could congratulate Sandie, while knowing that her fourth place (17 points) would mean a large step forward in her carreer. That same night 20 countries assure themselves of the rights of "L'amour est bleu". Not just the French version, but also the German (Blau wie das Meer), the Italian (l'amore e blu), the English (Love is blue) and the Dutch version (Liefde is zacht).

"L'amour est bleu" also became in other than European countries a smash-hit. In September Vicky received the news from Japan, that there are more than 200.000 copies sold over there, along with a telegram: "INVITE YOU FOR A TOUR- stop - EVERYTHING IS PREPARED- stop - JAPAN'S NEW STAR IS CALLED VICKY- stop". Vicky is reluctant, but Leo knows how to convince her: " It;s a
new chance for you to become an international star. But think about it thoroughly. It's you who has to decide!" The next day she made up her min: she goes to Japan! "L'amour est bleu" is the best selling Eurovision song ever!!!

Wind, Wind sing mir dein Lied Ich hor so gern Was Du erzahlst

Love is blue
Blue, blue, my world is blue Blue is my world Now I'm without you
Grey, grey, my life is grey Cold is my heart Since you went away
Red, red, my eyes are red Crying for you alone in my bed
Green, green, my jealous heart I doubted you And now we're apart
When we met How the bright sun shone
Then love died Now the rainbow is gone
Black, the nights I've known Longing for you So lost and alone
Gone, gone, the love we knew Blue is my world Now I'm without you
Red, red, my eyes are red Crying for you Alone in my bed
Green, green, my jealous heart I doubted you And now we're apart
Black, the nights I've known Longing for you So lost and alone
Blue, blue, my world is blue Blue is my world Now I'm without you
Grey, grey, my life is grey cold is my heart since you went away
Blue, blue, my world is blue Blue is my world Now I'm without you
Blue is my world Now I'm without you

Liefde is zacht

L'amore e blu
Blu, blu, l'amore e blu Quando come Come ci sei tu
Blu, blu, io vedo blu Quando come Come ci sei tu
Blu, blu, l'amore e blu Quando come Come ci sei tu

Eurovision Song Contest 1972
Vicky receives the message that Radio Tele Luxemburg invites her to represent Luxemburg again on the Eurovision Songcontest 1972.

Accompanied by her father and composer Klaus Munro. She flies to Edinburgh and on March 25th Vicky steps into the Eurovision spotlights again. 18 countries joined the 17th Songcontest in which Vicky
was drawn to appear 17th in line. Other favourites were the New Seekers with Beg, Steal Or Borrow and Sandra and Andres with Als Het Om De Liefde Gaat, but after Vicky sang the inpressive Apres Toi, everyone knew she was the absolute winner. 600 million viewers and the audience enter into Vicky's feelings, whose tention was all over her face, but the last group of juries made it final: 128 points made Vicky the winner.

Leo entered the stage and received from Severine (winner 1971 with Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue) the Gold Medal for his chanson. When his daughter entered the stage, they threw themselves into eachothers arms. Three days after the broadcast, 800.000 copies were already sold. "Apres toi" was not only released in French, but also in German, English, Greek, Italian, Spanish and Japanese. The song "Apres toi" entered the hitparades. In Germany only Vicky sold 150.000 copies after one week. On 18th she recieved her first golden single for selling more than one million copies. A few months after the contest was a plane of Lux-Air named afterVicky at the Heathrow airport in England. The month of December finally means the showbusiness, the month to draw up the balance-sheet. The English professional journal Record Mirror named her World Top Singer Girl, the famous magazine Der Musikmarkt gives her two titles: The best Interpreter and Best Female Recordselling artist 1972.

Apres toi

Come what may
There were times, in the days gone by When I thought I was living
Having fun with all the friends I knew
Now it seems all so long ago For my life changed completely
From the moment I met you
Come what may I will love you forever And forever my heart belongs to you
Come what may For as long as I'm living I'll be living only for you
Now I know I was lost till I met you When I met you, love told me what to do
Come what may In a world full of changes Nothing changes my love for you
Never ask, what the past was like I will live for tomorrow
Yesterday is very far away Now you're here; everything is new
You are all that I long for And I Long for you to stay

Dann kamst Du
Dann kamst Du
Und mit Dir kam die Liebe
Eine Liebe fur's ganze Leben
Nie zuvor,
Nie zuvor wollt' ich glauben
Dass es sowas je fur mich gibt
Dann kamst Du
Und dann hab' ich fur immer
Dir fur immer mein Herz gegeben
Nun weiss ich,
Dass das Leben erst schon ist
Wirklich schon ist, wenn man sich liebt
Frage nicht, nach vergang'ner Zeit
Fast schon hab' ich vergessen
Wie es war bevor ich Dich gekannt
Ohne Ziel lebte ich dahin
Meinte wohl ich war glucklich
Weil ich nichts vom Gluck verstand
