In a mini dictionary on Greek Mythology, I first heard about the Princess of the winds. (For those of you interested, the book was "Gods, Demigods & Demons- an Encyclopedia of Greek Mythology") Alcyone was the daughter of Aeolus who is the King of the winds. She is also in partly in charge of the moon. Later in life, she married the sun of the morning star, Ceyx. Their happiness soon at the envy of Hera, the wife of Zeus. To get back at them, she sent a storm out to the ship with Ceyx aboard. His ghost then appeared to Alcyone. To keep her husband company, she dived in and drowned. The king of all Gods, Zeus, felt pity for the couple and so turned them both into Kingfishers. Aeolus heard of this and commanded his winds to be steady for seven days so his daughter could lay her eggs in a nest in the ocean. It is from this myth that we get the word 'Halcyon' which stands for calm and golden days.
