Newspaper clipping DEATH OF MR THOS. SIMPSON, NORHAM Well known boatbuilder.spouse: Porter, Annie Isabella (1887 - 1977)A sad gloom was cast over the village on Sunday morning when it became known that Mr Thomas Simpson had passed away after a few hours' illness. On Friday evening he attended the choir practice at the Parish Church, so that the news of his death so suddenly came as a great shock to all the villagers.
The deceased was 54 years of age, and had carried on the business of joiner, undertaker and boat-builder successfully for many years. He was of a quiet and obliging disposition and won the respect of all with whom he came in contact by his upright dealings. He also took a great interest in the social affairs of the village, and held many important offices, such as Trustee of the Public Hall, Librarian of the Reading Room and Clear of the Managers of the Council School.
Mr Simpson built salmon angling boats which are used on most of the important salmon rivers in Great Britain.
The decased was also one of the leading members of the Oddfellows and for 30 years a leading member of the church choir. Anything appertaining to the welfare of the village received his willing help, and he took a great interest in the Football Club.
His death has caused a void which will be very difficult to fill and deep sympathy is felt for his widow and his two sons who are left to mourn the loss of a dear husband and a loving father.
THE FUNERAL So great was the esteem and respect in which Mr Simpson was held that practically every household in Norham was represented at the funeral to Norham Churchyard on Wednesday, as well as many friends and tradesmen in the immediate district.
Prior to the interment a short service was held in St. Cuthbert's Church with a hymn, "Lead Kindly Light", Psalm 23, and a lesson read by the Rev. T.Neal, Duddo. Canon Roberson, Norham, officiated at the graveside.
The principal mourners were: Mr W.Simpson (brother), Mr Thomas and Mr Douglas Simpson (sons), Mr and Mrs W.Young, Redcar, (uncle and aunt) Mr J.Young, Heaton (cousin), Mr J.Young, Norham, Miss Young, Miss Wilkinson, Mr Spence, Edinburgh, Mr Johnson, Newcastle, Mr J.Hardy, Branxton, Mr J. Fairnington, Branxton.
(A list of about 100 other mourners follows)
The underbearers were Messrs A.Robson, J.Turner, T.Purvis, W.Murray, past and present employees.
The girls' choir was present during the service in the Church, while Mr T.Walker accompanied at the organ, playing the Dead March from Saul at the close.

Cause - Stroke
My father, Tommy Simpson was born, married and lived all his life in Norham, Northumberland where he was the village Joiner, Boat builder and Undertaker. Norham is a rural community in the Tweed valley on the border with Scotland. Salmon fishing on the Tweed was, along with farming, the main occupation of the villagers. This has changed over the last 10 years with the fishing rights being bought out by the rich gentry, and virtually all net fishing has ceased. His net fishing boats, along with angling boats, all built from timber were used throughout the United Kingdom, and even after the introductionspouse: Cairns, Mary (1911 - )of aluminium and Fiberglas have continued in production by my Uncle Douglas and Cousin Ian to this day due to their greater durability and because their extra weight makes them a more stable platform for anglers.
