Adams County Wisconsin Place Names
and Post Office History
Adams County was formed from a portion of Portage County in March 1848. In March 1849 the county was enlarged to include what is now Juneau County. The voters of both counties approved dividing the county into Adams and Juneau Counties, with the Wisconsin River as their common boundary. The earliest birth and marriage registrations at the Adams County Courthouse in Friendship are 1857, and the earliest death registration was 1876. Wisconsin did not require registration of vital events until Oct 1, 1907, with nearly full compliance reached a few years after that date. Before Oct 1, 1907, vital event registration was voluntary in most cases, and could be filed in any WI county courthouse.
