Sarah Jane Richards was the daughter of William Richards, a coal miner, and was born on 18 October, 1867 She was the mother of five girls - Sarah, Elizabeth, Catherine, Gwyneth and Gertrude.

Sarah married Charles Cobley on 14 June, 1884 at Newport, South Wales. She was just sixteen, and married a man of thirty.

Sarah Jane died in childbirth on a hot summer's day on March 17, 1905. The five daughters were orphaned, the eldest being only about fifteen years old.

The grave of Charles and Sarah Jane Cobley is to be found in the Leonora Cemetery. It is in the Methodist section of the ground.
