Matthew Cobley was a coal miner in South Wales, and the father of Charles Cobley. His wife was Elizabeth. And apart from their photograph above, that is about all that is known of them.

UPDATE!
It has recently been disclosed that Matthew and Elizabeth had another, older son, Thomas. Thomas emigrated to the United States in the late 1870s, where he married a Welsh woman and they had a number of children, the descendants of whom now live in California. Some details of the family are hidden here.
