Charles is the eldest of four children of Irwin and Ailsa Poynton.

Irwin Hartley Poynton married Ailsa Gwyneth Compton at St John's Anglican Cathedral in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia on 25 August, 1948.

Exactly nine months later, Charles Edward Poynton was born at Norseman District Hospital, on 24 May, 1949.

Charles's siblings include Anthony Irwin Poynton, born in Perth on 17 May, 1951;
James Spencer Poynton, also born in Perth on 16 April, 1956; and Jennifer Anne Poynton, born at Woorooloo on 20 May, 1969.

Some consideration of the birth dates, and allowing for the probability that Jim was born about five weeks prematurely, suggests that the parents celebrated their wedding night and anniversaries thereof in a fashion which left a trail of evidence which cannot be concealed.
