George Compton was the eldest child of G.Spencer Compton and Elizabeth Jane Compton. He was born in Perth in
1921.
George married Muriel Holly in South Australia, and they had two children,
Stephen and Dianne.
George was a navigator and radio officer in the Royal Australian Air Force during
World War II, seeing action against Japanese installations.
After the war, he spent two years at Heard Island, in the Australian Antarctic Territory,
where the above photograph was taken outside the camp kitchen. You can see more of this
expedition at the 50th Anniversary site put together by the Australian Antarctic expedition.
He returned to Kalgoorlie, worked as an underground miner, mine surveyor and mine geologist.
He is now a semi-retired consultant geologist, living in Kalgoorlie. He edited and supervised the
publication of the diaries of James Balzano, an early goldfields personality. George was also a
regular contributor to the "Goldfields Gazette".
There is a certain convergence of interests with George and Charles, both being larrikin geoscientists.
Of course, there have also been some differences, as might be expected from two people of such disparate
political attitude and something of a generation gap. Here is a more recent photo (43K) of George Compton.
