Betty was one of five daughters of Charles Cobley and Sarah Jane Richards
All of the daughters - Gertrude, Sarah, Catherine (Cass), Betty and Gwyneth - were born in Bedwas, South Wales.
Their father worked in the Sons of Gwalia Gold Mine at Leonora, Western Australia, and after a few years,
brought his family to Australia.
The girls were orphaned within a few years of their arrival in Australia, with their
mother dying in 1905 and their father in 1909. Betty was working as a chambermaid
in Sandstone when she married Spencer on 2 January, 1914.
Spencer and Betty had four children - George, Joan, Ailsa and David.
