Charles Hartley Stokes

Charles Hartley Stokes 1881 - 1927

The above photograph was taken in 1921 at the homestead on "Piangle", at Illabarook in Victoria. The photograph shows Charles Stokes, Gladys Poynton and their two children, Edward and Joan. They are pictured together with Minnie Teather to the left of C.H.Stokes, and J.J.Poynton to the right. They later had three more children - Peter (later known as Hartley), Irwin and Valerie.

Charles Hartley Stokes appears in the electoral rolls in Kalgoorlie in 1916 and 1920. His occupation was as a mining surveyor. Gladys Laura Poynton was the daughter of Edward Poynton, also on the same electoral rolls.

Their children were Edward Stokes, Joseph Clement Hartley Poynton, Joan Stokes, Irwin Poynton and his twin, Valery Paton. Only his two sisters survive at the time of writing.

Charles Hartley Stokes was the second son of Charles Edward Stokes himself born in 1851 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Charles Hartley Stokes later worked for the Midland Railway Company, and was involved in an industrial accident in 1927. He refused to have his gangrene-infected broken leg amputated, and subsequently died. Gladys was widowed, and some of the children were fostered with relatives.

Irwin was adopted by Joseph James Poynton, manager of the Midland Railway Company, who, with his wife Minnie Teather, was childles.
