1840's - Mass is celebrated in private homes by Father Thomas Ryan and Father Lalumiere.
1843 - Chicago Diocese is established. Father Thomas Brady is assigned to Marshall.
1845 - Father D. Byrne and Father George Hamilton minister to the needs of Catholics of
Clark County.
1847 - Construction of the first Catholic Church is begun at
10th & Locust Streets by Father Hugh Brady.
1851 - The first Catholic Church building in Marshall is dedicated.
Late 1840's - Colonel William Archer donates land for a Catholic Cemetery.
1853 - Diocese of Springfield is formed.
1862 - Current Church location is purchased.
C. 1863 - Foundation & Cornerstone of current church building are laid.
1867 - Father J.A. Mark becomes pastor. Construction on present day church continues.
10/20/1872 - Present day church building is dedicated under the name: "Assumption of
Blessed Virgin Mary."
1870's - A Catholic Parochial School opens in Marshall.
1870's - A Catholic Rectory opens at St. Mary.s
C. 1880 - The brick bell tower is added to the Church.
C. 1900 - Church is enlarged.
1901 - Indoor plumbing is installed in Church.
Early 1900's - Oil is discovered in Casey & Robinson.
C. 1916 Steam heat replaces Church's wood stove
1922 Saint Mary's Rectory opens.
6/16/39 - Father Michael Donahue comes to Saint Mary's and
remains for 29 years.
1963 - Jim Ryan is named Head Usher. This was to be a temporary assignment.
1968 - 1969 Father Joseph Murray.
1969 - 1972 Father Thomas Ryan
1972 - 1975 Father Lawrence Auda
1972 - Church renovation
1973 - Care of Casey & Greenup Parishes is given to Marshall.
1975 - 1976 Father Victor Kaltenback
1976 - 1988 Father Lawrence Auda
1978 - Air Conditioning comes to Saint Mary's Church.
1988 - 2003 Father Jeff Grant is named Administrator at Saint
Mary's.
8/1989 - Sr. Therese MacKinnon, D.C. joins St. Mary's as
Pastoral Associate and Director of Religious Education.
November 1991 - Parish Hall opens.
January 2000 - Saint Mary's web site goes on-line.
August 2000 - Sister Barbara Jean Potthast, SSSF replaces Sister Therese MacKinnon, D.C. as Pastoral
Associate and Director of Religious Education.
May 2001 - Fire destroys Parish House.
Fall 2002 - Construction begins on Parish House replacement and Church renovation.
March 2003 -New Parish House is completed. Church renovation continues.
May 17, 2003 Father Jeff Grant announces that he is leaving Saint Mary's having been
reassigned to a parish in Decatur, Illinois. His replacement, Father Chris Brey, is
announced four weeks later.
June 28, 2003 - Springfield Diocese celebrates its 150th anniversary.
July 11, 2003 - A renovated Saint Mary's Church is rededicated.
July 15, 2003 - Father Chris Brey becomes Pastor at Saint Mary's.
October 2003 - Sister Barbara Jean Potthast, SSSF leaves Saint Mary's. |
