More About PATRICK MHOR MACGREGOR: Burial: Dysart Abbey Glenorcky Near Dalmally Scotland Child of PATRICK MHOR MACGREGOR is: 1. THE GREAT GREGOR PATRICKSON6 GREGOR, b. 1460, Scotland. Generation No. 6 THE GREAT GREGOR PATRICKSON6 GREGOR (PATRICK MHOR5 MACGREGOR, GREGOR4, IAIN CAM3, IAIN CAM2, GREGOR1) was born 1460 in Scotland. He married FINVOLA MACARTHUR. Notes for THE GREAT GREGOR PATRICKSON GREGOR: Titled Gregor The Great John MacGregor of Glenorchy, who died in 1390, is said to have had three sons; Patrick his successor; John Dow, ancestor of the family of Glenstrae, who became the chief ofthe clan; and Gregor, ancestor of the MacGregors of Roro. Patrick's son, Malcolm, was compelled by the Campbells to sell the lands of Auchinrevach in Strathfillan to Campbell of Glenorchy, who thus obtained the first footing in Breadalbane, which afterwards gave the title of earl to his family. "If they rob us of name and pursue us with Beagles, Give their roofs to the flame and their flesh to the Eagles; Then Gather, Gather, Gather; While there's leaves in the forest and foam on the river, MacGregor, despite them, shall flourish forever!" MacGregor saying, Tutor to Glenstrae and leader of the clan 1528 -1545. Probably should have become the rightful chief of Clan Gregor in 1519 when Ian the Black died, but the Campbells promoted instead the chieftain of Clan Dougal Ciar. Child of GREGOR GREGOR and FINVOLA MACARTHUR is: 1. DUNCAN7 MACGREGOR, b. 1490, Scotland; d. 1552, Scotland. Generation No. 7 DUNCAN7 MACGREGOR (GREGOR PATRICKSON6 GREGOR, PATRICK MHOR5 MACGREGOR, GREGOR4, IAIN CAM3, IAIN CAM2, GREGOR1) was born 1490 in Scotland, and died 1552 in Scotland. He married MARY CAMPBELL. She was born 1495 in Ardkinglass, Scotland. Notes for DUNCAN MACGREGOR: Called Ladassach (or Laideus = lordly, bold, stern - old Gaelic) The ringleader of all the most recalcitrant Gregarch of his time, doubtless as the righteous her to the MacGregor. Starved of land they nearly exterminated the clan McLaren and overran their lands in Balquhidder (1543-1558). In 1532 they slew the minister because of an argement with the McLarens about who should go into church first. These wild Gregarach were called the The Children of the Mist. Duncan married Mary Campbell of Ardkinglass. In 1488 soon after the youthful James IV had ascended the throne which the murder of his father had rendered vacant, an act was passed "for staunching of thiftreif and other enormiteies thrown all the realme"; evidently designed against the MacGregors, for among the barons to whom power was given for enforcing it were Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy, Neil Stewart of Fortingall, and Ewin Campbell of Strachur. At this time the MacGregors were still a numerous clan. Besides, those in Glenorchy, they were settled in great numbers in the districts of Breadalbane and Athol, and they all acknowledged MacGreogr of Glenstrae, who bore the title of captain of the clan, as their chief. Child of DUNCAN MACGREGOR and MARY CAMPBELL is: 1, GREGOR8 MACGREGOR, b. 1520, Scotland; d. 1552, Scotland. Generation No. 8 GREGOR8 MACGREGOR (DUNCAN7, GREGOR PATRICKSON6 GREGOR, PATRICK MHOR5 MACGREGOR, GREGOR4, IAIN CAM3, IAIN CAM2, GREGOR1) was born 1520 in Scotland, and died 1552 in Scotland. He married ISABEL CAMERON. She was born in Stronhead Scotland. Notes for GREGOR MACGREGOR: 1st Chieftan of the Children of the Mist. Beheaded with his father by the Campbells in 1552. Child of GREGOR MACGREGOR and ISABEL CAMERON is: 9. i. DUNCAN9 MACGREGOR, b. Abt. 1564, Scotland; d. 1603, Rannoch Moor, Scotland. Generation No. 9 DUNCAN9 MACGREGOR (GREGOR8, DUNCAN7, GREGOR PATRICKSON6 GREGOR, PATRICK MHOR5 MACGREGOR, GREGOR4, IAIN CAM3, IAIN CAM2, GREGOR1) was born Abt. 1564 in Scotland, and died 1603 in Rannoch Moor, Scotland. He married CHRISTIAN MACFARLANE. She was born 1568 in Scotland of Keppoch. Notes for DUNCAN MACGREGOR: AKA Donach Abboroch (So called because he was brought up in Lochaber) Slain by Robert Campbell 2nd son of Black Duncan of the Cowl on Rannoch Moor in 1603 (In Fame d Breadalbanep134). About 1588, there was an event that would shape the MacGregor clan forever. Several MacGregors were caught poaching on the king's (JamesVI) preserve by Deputy Forester of the Royal Forest of Glen Artney, John, 4th Laird of Drummond-Ernoch, and several MacGregors were captured and hung. In retaliation, the MacGregors later returned and attacked Drummond and killed him. The legend says that they cut off his head and wrapped it intheir plaid. They then went to the house of Ardvoirlich (Lady Stewart was the sister of the slain Drummond) and asked to stop there and refresh themselves. Afraid or unwilling to refuse their request, she had them seated in the main and gave them bread and cheese and went to the kitchen to order a more substantial meal. When she returned from the kitchen, there on the table was the head of her brother with the bread and cheese stuffed in his mouth! She went running out of the castle and into the woods where she hid for several weeks. When she was finally found, it was evident that she had gone insane. However, she began to regain her sanity after the birth of her son. (Recent research of documents seem to indicate that they cut off his hand instead of his head. It is also highly unlikely that the clan would repay the hospitality of Lady Stewart as it would be a breach of one of the principles of Highland culture - that of hospitality even to one's enemies. Besides, there was kinship there through the Stewarts. It has also been indicated by some depostions that it wasn't the MacGregors at all who killed Jon Drummond-Ernoch but members of the MacIan or MacDonald of Glencoe clan who were involved.) In any event, the Drummond family appealed to the Privy Council for justice. On February 4, 1590, the Council formed a commission (of whom Colin Campbell, Earl of Argyll, was a part). They were charged to find and punish the MacGregors responsible for the murder of John Drummond-Ernoch. It was further recommended that ALL MacGregors be captured and punished because if they weren't guilty of this crime, they were surely guilty of other crimes. This commission all owed to anyone to use any measure, including the use of lethal force, to bring anyone associated with the Clan Gregor to justice, and it rewarded the captors with half the value of any property which was to be automatcially forfeited by any captured MacGregor. (It is to be noted that the MacGregors and Drummonds fought beside each other at Prestonpans under the command of Bonnie Price Charlie in the Rising of the 45 so, somewhere down the line, they had come to terms with each other.) Child of DUNCAN MACGREGOR and CHRISTIAN MACFARLANE is: 1. OF ABRACH PATRICK10 MACGREGOR, b. Abt. 1607, Scotland; d. Abt. 1661. Generation No. 10 OF ABRACH PATRICK10 MACGREGOR (DUNCAN9, GREGOR8, DUNCAN7, GREGOR PATRICKSON6 GREGOR, PATRICK MHOR5 MACGREGOR, GREGOR4, IAIN CAM3, IAIN CAM2, GREGOR1) was born Abt. 1607 in Scotland, and died Abt. 1661. He married MARION MCDONALD Abt. 1617 in Scotland, daughter of JAMES MCDONALD and MARY MACLEOD. She was born Abt. 1600 in Auchatrichatan, Glencoe, Scotland. Notes for OF ABRACH PATRICK MACGREGOR: 3rd Chieftan of the Children of the Mist Patrick of Abrach MacGregor He was the chieftan of the Clan of the Children of the Mist (the sect that had been dispossessed of their lands and name.) This has also been called the Ladassach line. Patrick MacGregor of Ardchoille (called Aberach after his father), Chieftain of the Children of the Mist and is also said to have fought under Montrose at Kilsyth in 1645. He would, of course have been subordinate to the other Patrick who was his Chief. He married Marion MacDonald of Auchatrichatan in Glencoe, a member of the family of the MacDonalds of Sleat. By her, with other children, he had two sons - Iain, his heir, and James who settled in Virginia and was your ancestor. I am directly descend from his elder brother, Iain, as a matter of interest. In the latter half of the 16th century, this branch of the Clan led such wild and hunted lives in the misty mountains that they became know as MacEagh, or "Sons of the Mist." It may be that it is from this Gaelic patronym that James MacGregor took the name MacGehee (McGehee Descendants by ECW Grider quoting Sir Gregor MacGregor). Child of PATRICK MACGREGOR and MARION MCDONALD is: 1. MAJOR WILLIAM11 MACKGEHEE, b. 1618, Scotland; d. 1675, St. John's Parish, King William County, Virginia. Generation No. 11 MAJOR WILLIAM11 MACKGEHEE (PATRICK10 MACGREGOR, DUNCAN9, GREGOR8, DUNCAN7, GREGOR PATRICKSON6 GREGOR, PATRICK MHOR5 MACGREGOR, GREGOR4, IAIN CAM3, IAIN CAM2, GREGOR1) was born 1618 in Scotland, and died 1675 in St. John's Parish, King William County, Virginia. Notes for MAJOR WILLIAM MACKGEHEE: AKA James MacGregor See oath of allegiance dated April 11, 1652 in Virginia State Historical Library See W. G. One document states that he was killed by Indians. Another claims that he was scalped by Indians. Child of MAJOR WILLIAM MACKGEHEE is: 1. THOMAS12 MACKGEHEE, b. 1655, York County, Virginia; d. July 27, 1727, St. John's Parish, King William County, Virginia. Generation No. 12 12. The church serves portions of both James City County and New Kent County (a portion of which will later become King William County). 1699, June: Jamestown, Virginia A committee favors 28 separate grants in Pamunkey Neck, including 100 acres leased by Thomas MackGehee to Daniell Grant. 1702, March 10: King William County, Virginia James Johnson confers a power of attorney upon Thomas MackGehee witnessed by Edward Huckstep, William Lacy, and John Williams. 1706, June 7: King William County, Virginia Thomas MackGehee, Samuel Norment and William Lacey are sworn as appraisers of the estate of Alexander Autry, the value of which they place at 4000 pounds of tobacco.
